Zach Green 1B- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .320.
Chris Shaw LF- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .000.

AA  Portland Sea Dogs downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-2:

Jonah Arenado SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .307.
Gio Brusa DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .253.

A+  San Jose Giants pounded the Modesto Nuts 9-4:

Heliot Ramos CF- 4 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .326.
Joey Bart C- 2 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .300.
Courtney Hawkins LF- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .213.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.

3 cheers for Heliot Ramos and Joey Bart!  Someone asked in the draft post where I would rank Hunter Bishop among Giants prospects.  Joey Bart was drafted higher, plays a more premium position and has done nothing to lose his status as #1.  What Heliot Ramos is doing at age 19 on the Cal League is really special.  Kind of reminds me of another 19 year old who tore up the Cal League a few years ago named Mike Trout.  So Ramos is not only still #2, he might be challenging Bart for #1!  Video coming out of Extended Spring Training is making Marco Luciano look like an absolute beast!  He appears to have the highest ceiling in the organization.  He stays at #3 and is also challenging for #1.  So.....Hunter Bishop is #4 on my list.  That's not a knock on Bishop.  IMO, the Giants top 3 are grossly underrated.

A Augusta Greenjackets outscored the Asheville Tourists 7-6 in 11 innings:

Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 5.  BA= .272.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .230.
Dalton Combs DH- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .462.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.00.

DSL  Giants pounded the Royals2 10-6:

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1), SB(2).  BA= .250.
Victor Bericoto 1B- 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .333.
Diego Verbel 2B- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .300.
Jose Peralta 3B- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .182.
Luis Castillo LHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

First big game for Luis Matos, the 3'rd of the Giants "Big Three" July 2 signings from last year.  Diego Verbel and Luis Castillo are still just 16 years old.  Victor Bericoto and Jose Peralta are both 17 years old.  Looks like a great group of new prospects in the DSL camp and they don't even include the top two signees from last year, Marco Luciano and Jairo Pomares who are in extended spring training in Arizona.

  1. This is the part of a "rebuild" that stirs excitement for those who are willing to look a little bit. Doc, your Blog is so helpful in keeping us up to date on how prospects are performing. It seems to me it is entirely possible that those who make a living evaluating and grading farm systems and organizations may discover soon that the Giants have made real progress while they were looking elsewhere.

The only way the Giants become relevant in the near future from a competitive standpoint is if some of these young guys blossom quickly - maybe ahead of schedule. Because, with the contracts the Giants are saddled with, it's not going to be easy to take a big leap into the free agent market. If the Giants can resist the temptation to defy the laws of gravity and lay out big dollars, the patience will pay off.

There should be a nice group of prospects added to the organization when Bumgarner, Smith, Dyson, Vogt and Watson are moved between now and the deadline. The Giants will likely be picking in the top five next June, so at least one more premium prospect should be added. And, fingers crossed, the Giants could bring in one or two more strong international prospects. It could get pretty exciting to watch those minor league box scores.

The next decade may get off to a slow start, but it could nonetheless be a very exciting time for fans at Oracle.
