Down on the Farm: 6/17/2019

AAA  Iowa Cubs outscored the Sacramento River Cats 10-8:

Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 5, HR(14).  BA= .333.
Austin Slater LF/3B- 3 for 5, HR(11).  BA= .296.
Chris Shaw 1B- 2 for 5, 2 HR(4).  BA= .309.
Francisco Pena C- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(6).  BA= .330.
Ryan Howard 3B/2B- 1 for 4, HR(3), BB.  BA= .233.

Seems like Gerber, Slater and Shaw all need to get extended looks at the MLB level before the seasons done.

Jairo Pomares RF- 2 for 5.  BA= .400.
Jasier Herrera RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.60.

Ghordy Santos who got off to extremely slow starts in both of his DSL seasons gets off to a hot start in his Arizona debut.

Rookie AZL  Angels doubled up the Giants Orange 8-4:

Luis Toribio 3B- 3 for 4, HBP, SB(1).  BA= .750.
Connor Cannon 1B- 2 for 3, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .667.
Edison Mora SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .500.
Conner Nurse RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Jorge Labrador RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Luis Toribio picks up where he left off in the DSL. Seem like a hitter.  Connor Cannon has toonder in his bat to match his name.  Needs to dominate Rookie ball coming out of college.  Conner Nurse pitched effectively in the AZL last year so not sure why he's back at this level unless he is rehabbing a spring injury.

  1. Unfortunately, a lot of hollow hitting stats in Sacramento. A good place to determine a pitcher's worth. I think they should perhaps look into relocating the AAA affiliate.

  2. Conner Nurse pitched 5 scoreless innings only allowing 1 hit, (a single) in the first inning, leading the AZL giants orange to beat the Angels 8-4, allowing Nurse to get the win. He had a good numbers last year and has picked up right where he left off. I thought for sure giants were going to challenge him this year by sending him to Augusta. Based on what I saw, Nurse has good composure on the mound and all the makings of a 2 or 3 SP in any rotation. Coming out of spring, word was giants had a bottleneck of pitchers and would focus the 2019 draft on position players. Unfortunately I think Nurse being stuck in AZL again is a result of this bottleneck and his young age.
