Scouting the 2019 Draft: Hunter Bishop

Hunter Bishop OF, College(Arizona State).  B-L, T-R.  6'5", 210 lbs.

2019:  .366/.492/.814, 13 2B, 4 3B, 22 HR, 11 SB, 16.94 BB/9, 21.90 K/9, 242 PA.

A huge junior season breakout vaulted Hunter Bishop into top 10 consideration as the 2019 draft approaches.  Intriguing for Giants fans is he went to HS at Junipero Serra in San Mateo and attended college at Barry Bonds' alma mater.  His brother is highly regarded OF prospect Braden Bishop. He's a 5-tool player with enough speed to stick in CF.  Scouts rate his speed at 60 and raw power at 65-70. Negatives include a weak sophomore campaign and relatively disappointing Cape Cod League performances.  On the other hand his breakout statistically appears to be real with a significantly improved K and BB ratios.  Right now, he's being mocked from #3 to #10 which is the Giants spot.  As always, how scouts of individual teams judge the hit tool will be key to his final draft position.

DrB's Updated 2019 Draft Board:

1.  Adley Rutschman, C, College(Oregon St).  Excellent catching prospect whose bat had a huge sophomore breakout which carried over to his junior season:  .433/.582/.793, 16 HR.  Moves ahead of Bobby Witt Jr.  I think you have to take the college bat at a premium position over the HS 5-tool player for #1 overall.

2.  Andrew Vaughn 1B, College(Cal).  Top college power bat in the draft.  Numbers guys like him better than the scouts.  Not quite as dominant at the plate as his Sophomore season, but has been pitched around a lot.  .374/.530/.712, 14 HR.  College bats are safest bets in the draft and there is really no evidence HS bats have higher ceilings, so I'll bump Vaughn up to #2 despite defensive/positional limitations.

3.  JJ Bleday OF, College(Vanderbilt).  Big athletic OF from an elite program.  Huge breakout junior season:  .343/.456/.747, 23 HR.  May not be a CF but the bat will play in a corner.  Bat has progressed enough to rank in top tier of college bats, which again are statistically the safest picks.

4.  Hunter Bishop OF, College(Arizona St.).  See profile above.  Only question about him is length of swing and K rate.

5.  Bobby Witt Jr. SS, HS.  5-tool athlete with MLB bloodline who can stick at SS.  Stock has not dropped so much as the college bats have really stepped up.

6.  CJ Abrams SS, HS.  4+ tool prospect with best wheels in the draft.  Power lags a bit.  Stock has not dropped during his senior season.

7.  Bryson Stott SS, College(UNLV).  Solid college bat who can stick at SS.  Solid junior season:  .369/.498/.636, 19 2B, 2 3B, 10 HR, 15 SB.  Multiple mocks have him going to the Giants at #10.  That would be OK since I rank him higher in this draft.

8.  Corbin Carroll OF, HS.  Undersized, speedy, athletic OF with a strong hit tool in the mold of Ellsbury and Benintendi.  Hit tool seems solid enough to take a chance on drafting him with a high pick.  Projects as CF.

9.  Kameron Misner OF, College(Missour).  Best all around tools among college draft prospects.  2019 offensive numbers a bit disappointing:  .290/.444/.497, 10 HR, 19 SB.  Giants have reportedly scouted him heavily.  Most boards have him falling clear out of first round.  I still believe in the athleticism.  If both Stott and Misner are there at #10, I'd definitely take Stott, but if all of 1-7 above are gone, Misner would be a respectable choice.

10.  Josh Jung 3B, College(Texas Tech).  Disciplined bat with power potential.  Very respectable junior numbers:  .355/.491/.634, 9 HR.

11.  Alek Manoah, RHP, College(West Virginia).  We haven't profiled him yet.  Huge RHP, 6'7", 270 lbs.  Very strong junior numbers:  7-3, 1.89, 90.2 IP, 22 BB, 121 K.  Giants have reportedly scouted him heavily.  I really want a college bat, but Manoah seems like a potential ace or future Closer so would be a worthy 10'th pick.  Best college pitcher in the draft in a down year for college pitching.

Comments:  Most boards have Nick Lodolo as the top college pitcher.  I'd prefer Manoah.  Most boards have HS OF/1B Riley Greene in the 10.  If he and Nick Lodolo are both top 10, they push some players down to the Giants increasing the probability of getting a top 10 worthy pick.  I guess I kind of have my heart set on Stott, but there is one scenario where Andrew Vaughn slides due to position issues.  If that happened, Giants should grab him.

  1. Dr B - would the Giants trade Bumgarner for a higher 2019 draft pick, say Padres #6? Maybe the Padres throw in Hunter Renfroe? Add that pick to their own #10? Or have I been following the NFL too much...

  2. I'm good with various mock drafts linking the Giants to top college prospects like Stott, Misner, Manoah. College prospects tend to reach the majors quicker. If Farhan takes Stott #1, it'll be brought up that in 1986 former Giants GM Al Rosen took another UNLV shortstop Matt Williams #1. Ironically that was also Rosen's 1st draft as Giants GM.
