Down on the Farm: 5/6/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats bludgeoned the Reno Aces 12-6:

Mike Yastrzemski CF- 2 for 4, HR(7), HBP.  BA= .266.
Austin Slater 1B- 3 for 4, 2 HR(5), BB.  BA= .309.
Mac Williamson RF- 3 for 3, 3 HR(9), BB, SF.  BA= .378.
Brandon Van Horn 3B- 2 for 2, HR(1).  BA= 1.000.
Fernando Abad LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 0.77.

How do you spell RIDICULOUS?  That's what Mac's season in Sacramento has become.  Even more RIDICULOUS?  That he hasn't been given a chance to do that in San Francisco!  OK, Mike Gerber deserved a chance to get a foothold.  Thank you, next!  Austin Slater is another long time Giants farmhand who has taken a to do list to heart and is producing improved results.  In addition to the dramatically improved walk rates, Slater's GB/FB has gone from 2.21 in 2017 to 1.50 in 2018 to 1.18 so far this season.  And, it's not like Mac and Slater have never shown possibilities in the past.  Oh, and one of Mac's Mash's travelled an estimated 511 feet.  That is Glove territory in Oracle Park!

AA  Trenton Thunder topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 5, 2 SB(9).  BA= .253.
Jacob Heyward LF- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .327.
Heath Quinn RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .222.
Garrett Williams LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.13.
Conor Overton RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.06.
Sam Wolff RHP- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.13.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 11.25.

Jalen Miller seems to have kicked both his power and speed game up a notch this season.  Garrett Williams exited the game after 1 inning with an apparent injury.

A+  San Jose Giants and the Cal League were idle.

A  Hagerstown Suns outscored the Augusta Greenjackets 7-6:

Wander Franco 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .191.
Nico Giarratano SS- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .179.
Seth Corry LHP- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.88.
Tyler Schimpf- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.94.
Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.93.

Tona give up his first runs of the season.

  1. By way of comparison, when Mac went down to AAA last season, in 52 games, he hit .269 with 13 homeruns, 44 rbi, 7 2b, and 1 3b, and scored 31 runs. This year, in 23 games, he's hitting .378 (!!!), with 9 hr, 22 rbi, 4 2b, and has scored 23 runs. His OPS has risen from .905 to 1.215. His slg. From .533 to .756. AND, it's pretty obvious that AAA pitching is petrified of him right now.

What I'm saying is, let's call him up and put him in left field. Thank you.

    1. Now Mac has to prove he has learned patience at the Plate and the HR's will come without over reaching.

  3. Will Yaz beat Mac to SF?

  4. Awesome news. It appears as if Breyvic Valera was DFAed to open up a spot on the 40 man. No idea on the major league roster. Gerber, perhaps?

  5. Oh, also, great timing for Mac to come back just in time to get a few swings in Denver.

  6. So Mac is up..and supposedly so is Donovan Solano?----does that mean Solarte is let go or DL? and maybe even Jerez up also? (they should send Verdite packing!)..And what's the deal of trading for Tyler Austin, giving up Assets, and barely using him?..His bat has been pretty hollow, but is he THAT bad in the field that they cant give him more of a chance? and him and MAC seem kinda redundant?

I guess we need to give Farhan some time, and he does seem to think outside the box, but given all the new players he has picked up/tried, and the series of moves and blunders that just seem like throwing things agasint the wall to see what sticks, I really, really question his talent evaluation skills..because t hat is all that really matters..not that he has a new way or approach.

      Not snark, but why?
He's been a key part of 2 FOs (OAK & LAD) that have track record for finding and developing talent.
YMMV, but I can't think of a better person for the spot he got.

Interested in your preference for the hire rather than Farhan.

  7. I am sure Mac slipped through waivers because we on this board crossed our fingers. Get it on Mac!

    1. I wonder how many GMs are kicking themselves that they could have picked up Williamson. I hope he comes up with 2 HRs a week. Also I love seeing Yazstremski showing up on the hitting report every day now - how great would it be to have a Yazstremski-Duggar-Williamson era for SF?

    2. Duggar looks like a keepr - good D, wheels, and hustle attitude. Mac just hit a bomb in his 2nd AB haha. If Mac sticks we only have one slot to fill - YAZ or Slater or Shaw or Ramos 18 months. I guess no GM was paying attention last year when Mac hit 3 HR's in 5 games - what a stud bat.

  8. I'm hoping for the best for Mac. I don't want another Trevor Linden or John Bowker, guys that crushed AAA, but couldn't hit in the bigs.
