Game Wrap 5/3/2019: Giants 12 Reds 11(11 Innings)

The Tyler Beede Era did not get off to a great start and may not have a long lifespan, but Beede did set the stage for one of the great comeback wins for the Giants in recent memory.  Evan Longoria capped it off with a solo HR in the 11'th inning and Will Smith brought it home with the Save.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 1 for 6, HR(2).  BA= .200.  Panik capped off a 4-run rally in the 6'th inning with a 2-run blast.  The 5 outs he recorded in his other PA's are not encouraging, though.

Mike Gerber LF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .333.  2 days after GMsplaining about roster limitations preventing him from calling up Mac Williamson, he proved it was all complete BS by DFA'ng Gerardo Parra to make room for Mike Gerber.  Nothing against Gerber.  He deserved a call up too.  Why not just say Gerber was ahead on the depth chart and he wanted a longer look at Tyler Austin?  Anyway, Gerber did not figure in the scoring but hit a ringing double in his first AB in the first inning.

Evan Longoria 3B- 3 for 5, HR(4), BB.  BA= .223.  Longo already had a pretty good game by the time he came up in the 11'th inning and untied it with a solo longball.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .202.  This was Crawford's first multi-hit game since April 6.

Steven Duggar RF- 3 for 5, SF.  BA= .256.  Duggar's second 3-hit game in a row, one as a leadoff bater and one out of the 8-hole.  Both were key lines to winning games.

Steven Vogt C- 3 for 3, 2B, HR(1).  BA= 1.000.  Eric Kratz was placed on the 10-day DL essentially to make room for Vogt.  Wow! What a difference on offense!  The Giants were 1 out away from a Loss when Vogt's solo blast sent it into extra frames.

Tyler Beede RHP- 2.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 27.00.  The only difference between this start and Beede's last start in a Giants uniform is the radar gun was showing higher velocities today. Whether that is enough to buy him another look, I guess we'll see. Ugh! We may look back on the Tyler Beede Era as being very short.

Bullpen- 8.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 13 K.  Travis Bergen, Sam Dyson, Tony Watson, Reyes Moronta and Will Smith pitched scoreless frames with Smith picking up his 8'th Save.

With the Win, the Giants remain 6 games off the pace in the NL West and 4.5 games behind in the Wild Card race.

Dereck Rodriguez tries to clinch a series win tomorrow evening facing Tanner Roark.

  1. Perhaps if SF can score double-digit runs anyone can pitch?
Having lost 7-in-a-row in Cincy, this looked like another one.
Will D-rod show he's for real tonight?
Gerber is Zaidi's guy, Mac certainly is NOT. He doesn't see a Muncy there. Squint a little, Farhan!

    1. It's a resilience check for Beede - he had some bad luck there in a HR park but he was throwing 95+. He deserves a home appearance in the friendly vast confines of Oracle Park.

  3. Great comeback and hats off to VOGT for his Giant introduction!Hopefully that will turnout to be a smart move by Farhan..unlike his other vet talent evaluations--Maybin and Parra...After a bunch of talent evaluation whiffs on guys like Fergurson, Reed, Joe, Garcia, Ramos, (even Austin has little thunder), I hope Gerber has some stayong power..He has earned a chance and he will get a long one as Farhan's 1st born..:)..I hope he takes advantage of it.....As For MAC, the adopted red headed kid, I hope he can keep his spirits up and force his way on to the team if a injury comes up or at least get anohter club to try and pry him away ..I think the latter will be more realistic..

Great to see DUGGAR continue to bounce back from his minislump..I really like this kid's approach and all around game..Perfect as a CF where i want to see him for the next ten years, just not what you expect offensively from a corneer OF..Maybe PILLAR gets flipped by the deadline??

A few hiccups here or there this season, but you gotta love the work of the bullpen..Talk about increasing your trade value...MORONTA had those two bad games but has been filthy the last 10..ditto for SMith except that mop up inning..

Was afraid that might happen to Beede last night..giving him hs first start after a long fligh and in the Cincy band box was not ideal...I didnt watch to know what he did wrong/different but Hopefully he gets one more shot back in SF

But, as some have said, this year's team will get deecnt to good pitching but it's success will live or die with the vets---Panik, posey, Belt, Crawford and Longo...Some good things last night from Longo and a sign of life from CRAW (probably becsue I released him from my fantasy team!) but if they can all get going to something like their careeer average, things change

    1. I think everyone and their neighbour's dog would like the OF to be Williamson Duggar Gerber, Z just needs to commit to it. Pillar goes. TAustin gets hits, SVogt get hits - they should stay up and tag team as LH/RH platoon players at 1B and C with Sandoval and Solano, who gets hits and can play better backup SS than Solarte?) - that's your 12 hitters. Trade Pillar and create the spot for Williamson. trade or DFA Solarte to create the spot for Solano. Take the best lineup you've got and put it on the field NOW for @#$ sake.

  4. Enjoy hearing stories like Steven Vogt, grew up a Giants fan, coming back from shoulder surgery, and helping the team in a big come from behind win getting 3 hits with a dramatic homer to tie the game in the 9th inning, outstanding!

    1. Small sample size I know, but look up the SFGiants hitting stats after that Cincinnati game. Batting average and OBP: 1. Vogt 2. Gerber 3. T Austin. Z has found some hitters - just where do you squeeze them into a lineup of highly paid .200 hitters who take turns occasionally hitting a game-winner?

  5. I believe Gerber has minor league options while Mac doesn't. This gives them a chance to look at Gerber and send him down if he's not ready. They have to be more certain with Mac since they probably won't try to sneak him back to the minors once he's up.
