Game Wrap 5/9/2019: Rockies 12 Giants 11

Tyler Austin's breakout game was not enough to overcome Raging Rockies in a slugfest in a very cold Coors Field.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF- 0 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .259.  Duggar reached base twice and scored twice out of the leadoff spot.

Tyler Austin 1B- 2 for 5, 2 HR(2).  BA= .325.  A very good manager named Earl Weaver used to say winning baseball was great pitching and 3-run home runs, essentially Moneyball right there.  The Giants get three in the past two game out of Mac Williamson and Tyler Austin.  Now for the pitching part.....

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .205.  Still don't quite understand how a guy who has done as many good things as Pillar has a .205 BA and a negative fWAR.

Aramis Garcia C- 0 for 2, BB.  BA= .000.  Garcia gets the call when Buster Posey goes on the DL with a concussion from a foul tip last Sunday.  OK.....

Derek Holland LHP- 2.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.75.  Extremely poor conditions in Coors Field.  We'll give him a Mulligan, but he gave up 6 runs in 5 IP in his last start before going on the DL.

Tyler Beede RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 18.69.  Better than his last appearance, but that's not saying much.  Beede is back up due to Drew Pomeranz placement on the IL due to an oblique strain.  Dodgers are strongly suspected of abusing the IL to give players rest during the season.  This is starting to feel like that.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.14.  So that string of scoreless innings to start the season?  It was a mirage.  5 ER in his last 3 IP/Appearances.  Melancon is not going to be the Closer again anytime soon.

Travis Bergen LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.46.  Bergen is still looking like a very savvy Rule 5 Draft pick.

With the Loss, the Giants are now 7.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and 5.5 behind in the Wild Card race.

Giants finish the road trip 3-3 in two parks where they tend to fall apart.  Now the challenge is to not do a faceplant at home.  Dereck Rodriguez tries to avoid that tonight facing Luis Castillo.

  1. Here's a weak defense for Melancon:
2 excuses are @ Cincinnati and @ Colorado.
The 3rd is Luke Volt (10 HRs? now) in the 9th inning of a game that was probably lost (Giants not hitting, LHP Chapman coming in the 9th).
    I know that's pathetic, but ...

  2. Tyler Austin starting and Belt sitting - I like this. This has to be make or break year for Belt and if he can't get it together prep 1B for Shaw or Austin or another basher.
