Game Wrap 9/7/2018: Brewers 4 Giants 2

The Giants got another Quality Start and lost another game.  Pretty familiar story line for the season.  Key Lines:

Alen Hanson SS- 2 for 3, HR(8), SB(7).  BA= .267.  Projected to 600 PA, Alen Hanson's counting stats would be 35 2B, 11 3B, 18 HR, 15 SB, 75 R, 86 RBI.  That's  dynamic player!  He's still just 25 yo he could be still a season or two from his peak.

Derek Holland LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.54.  The only hits Derek Holland allowed in the game came in the first inning. Unfortunately one was a 2-run HR to Ryan Braun.  Ironically, none of his 5 BB's figured in any of the scoring.

Holland is pitching for a contract and with each game, his payday is looking sweeter.  This was his 3'rd QS in a row.  He has a 2.50 ERA over his last 7 appearances and a 2.66 over his last 15.  He leads the team in IP(152.2), K's(152) and Starts(27).

Hunter Strickland RHP- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.46.  Strick is in a rough patch manifested by an ERA of 5.68 over is last 7 appearances and 5.54 over his last 15.  Tonight, he walked 2 of 3 batters he faced and then Tony Watson, who is scuffling himself, allowed both runners to score on a double.  Watson has an ERA of 9.00 in 6 IP over his last 7 appearances.

Steven Okert LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  I did not realize that Okert had not appeared in a Giants game this season before his September call up.  He actually had an interesting season for the Sacramento River Cats.  His ERA of 4.55 was not impressive but he had 43 K's and just 8 BB's in 31.2 IP.

Depending on the Twins and the Mets, Giants could make it to 10th pick, but 11 or 12 is more likely.
Thus, with the 2nd highest payroll in baseball, the Giants moved up about 10 slots and jeopardized the team's future with a flirtation with CBT hell.
Of course it's up to the players to perform, but the FO chooses the players and haven't really done too well judged by recent performance.
The loyalists are confident, the pessimists are not.

    1. 1. They did not jeopardize the team's future as they knew exactly where they CBT threshold was and stayed below it. 2. Maybe injuries are predictable and management should have known they would lose their top 3 SP for large chunks of the season plus a long string of assorted injuries to position players, but I think you have to factor that in too.

I am neither confident nor pessimistic. Giants management accomplished what they set out to do: Put together a team that would remain competitive late into the season with the possibility of more if everything went right. A whole lot did not go right and they still stayed in contention until the end of August.

Like it or not, they will try to do the same thing in 2019. If you are one who does not like it, then place the blame where it belongs: Ownership. That is their business model and has been since they purchased the team. In that time, everything went right 3 times. It will again someday.

  2. What do you bet Strickland is not on next year's team?

    1. He will be on the team if he’s not traded.

    2. giants will have to make a decision whether or not to tender him this offseason. strickland still looks hurt, his velocity is down and he needs to be in mop up at this point.

  3. At this point I only care about two things:

    1. Watching the youngsters play.

    2. The last three games of the season against the Dodgers (if we can knock them out). If we can knock them out, I'd be looking for Bumgarner, Stratton & D-Rod to pitch that series. Even if it means tinkering with the rotation.

Once it's all done, then Hot-Stove. I don't worry all-that-much about the draft-position so much as I don't think they can lose enough games to make a big-deal difference in prospect quality. There's very little difference in just a couple of positions, so they'd need to Tiger-Tank to make a serious difference. And I just don't see them doing that.

    1. the schedule will help them improve their draft position at this rate. they may barely avoid another 90-loss season. i

    2. Last year's Tiger Tank was voluntary - this Giants team appears to be tanking involuntarily - like the old man with the shaking leg syndrome - they just can't help it. They can't score any runs.

Yes-I have seen enough if Blanco / Hundley / Pence - want to see Garcia / Avelino / Slater / Shaw

  4. if crawford is hurt, shut him down. there is no point starting him for the rest of the year.

  5. Not sure how the money situation works out, but what are the chances the Giants look to move on from Joe Panik and keep Hanson around at 2B? He brings an element that this veteran-heavy team needs and, frankly, has performed significantly better than Panik for quite some time now. Maybe they can use him as a super-utility and hope Panik bounces back enough to get a little value in trade for him?

    1. Catch 22. If Panik bounces back next year, the Giants are unlikely to trade him. If he doesn't, he won't provide much in value in a trade.
