GM Job Interview

There is noise coming out of the Giants camp about hiring a "high level" baseball executive from outside the organization which would kick Brian Sabean back upstairs and leave Bobby Evans.....somewhere.  You have a great plan for rebuilding the Giants and think you would be perfect for the position.  In the Comments, lay out what you would tell Larry Baer and Brian Sabean in your interview about your plan for the Giants in 2019 and beyond.  Be as specific as possible.  If you want to fire Bruce Bochy, who would you hire to replace him?  If you want to trade Madison Bumgarner, where would you trade him to and for whom?  If you want to keep Bummy, how much are you going to pay him and how does that fit into the budget for the next 5-6 years?

Here's your big chance.  Run with it!

  2. First off I would propose an additional revenue source that would inject at least $1,000,000 every year in ticket sales and concessions. Put a couple of party pits in triples alley and bring the fences in to normal depth. Leave a few quirks like a corner for the ball to kick around in and a low fence where homeruns can be robbed. Make it a nuetral park and continue to develop good pitching while having an easier time attracting good hitters.

Bochy gets one more year but we all know its his last. If Dustie wants to clean up the mess I offer him the job. It will take 3-4 years to sniff playoffs again and if Dustie is fine with spending his twilight years developing kids then why not him?

MadBum starts the year as the ace and if things fall apart before trade deadline we deal him then. Value for MadBum will be the same if not more at the deadline.

Spend the first part of the offseason trading Panik, Belt, and Strickland for whatever you can get in return. Panik and Belts value is negative so getting rid of them and their contracts is a win in itself. The Rays have shown us on several occasions that there is always a team willing to take your trash (Moore & Span) if the deal makes sense. Start fresh on the right side of the infield and start planning for the inevitable move of Posey to 1B.

Spend the second half of the offseason bargain hunting. Last year Moustakas had to settle for a 1 year 6 million deal. If Daniel Murphy doesnt get signed right away or Dozier is williing to take $10 mil for 1 year we get em. After next season go hard after Arenado, JD Martinez, or Goldschmidt.

Continue to draft pitching and use free agency and international market for bats. This scouting department knows what they are doing when it comes to pitching and you embrace that strength. The bats will come when the yard is a little friendlier.

    - Just a fan

  3. Well, what can the Giants do but ride out the core until Posey's contract is up. The elements are there that if the Giants can field a league-average offense and things break right they have a shot at the 2nd WC. So in order to try to get a league-average offense they have to aim for at least 20 hrs from each position.

    1. Sign A.J. Pollock to something like 3/50 mil contract
    2. Re-sign Nick Hundley for 1/2 mil
    2. Trade Joe Panik for Domingo Santana. Santana is odd man out in Milwaukee, as much as I love Panik, we need power
    3. Trade Hunter Strickland, Slater, Ray Black, low-level pitching prospects for Jurickson Profar

1B - Brandon Belt - Yes, every season we say he has potential to hit 30 hrs. Give him a healthy 550 ABs and he can definitely reach 20-25
    2B - Jurickson Profar/Alen Hanson - 20 is very doable
    SS - Brandon Crawford/Profar - 18-20 is reachable
    3B - Evan Longoria/Pablo Sandoval - 20-25
    LF - Chris Shaw/Mac Williamson - 25 is possible
    CF - A.J. Pollock/Steven Duggar - 20 is pretty safe bet
RF - Steven Duggar/Domingo Santana - 20+, Santana is year removed from a breakout year
    C - Aramis Garcia/Nick Hundley - Outside chance at 20

    Rotation:

    Madison Bumgarner (L)
    Jeff Samardzija
    Andrew Suarez (L)
    Chris Stratton
    Dereck Rodriguez

    Bullpen:
    Ty Blach (L) Longman
Cheap arm - Law, Wolff, Johnson
    Sam Dyson
    Reyes Moronta
    Tony Watson (L)
    Mark Melancon
    Will Smith (L)

LF and RF will be strict platoon. See how first half breaks. There'll be plenty of money to makes moves if in contention by the trade deadline. If it's obvious that they're NOT contenders, then time to trade Bumgarner and any other tradeable assets.

Invest heavily in international scouting, Cuba, DR, Japan, Korea. Maybe Barr needs to retire? Try to poach Logan White?

    1. Panik isn’t bringing back Santana.
Pollock isn’t taking 3/50 and the giants aren’t signing a CF.
Wolff will be expensive and might be a nontender.
Johnson should not be on the team.

      Where is Posey?

    2. Agree it would take more than Panik to get Domingo Santana, but I like Santana a lot and I think he's acquirable.

Agree Pollock is going to get a lot more than $50 M in FA.

Rangers aren't going to trade Profar.

Not sure why Wolff would be expensive. He has no service time and is not arbitration eligible.

I like the general idea of Anon's proposal. Details would be a bit different.

    3. Posey might be out for 2019 depending on extent of surgery.

Domingo Santana is a glorified pinch hitter in Milwaukee right now. There's no place for him as a starter. If Milwaukee declines Moustakas option, then they might want a 2B. Panik might not do it, but Santana is definitely gettable.

Yeah, I guess Pollock will take more. But I wouldn't go longer than 3 years with an option and no more than $60 mil. If that's enough, just roll with Hernandez and Duggar at CF

Jurickson Profar might also be gettable for a Rangers team that would like to start over in their rotation. Offer a number of intriguing arms.

    4. Sorry. I was thinking Dyson. Ex Texas flamethrowers are interchangeable in my head, apparently.

  4. Because they’re so backed into the corner with bad contracts, they really have no choice but to trade Bum with the caveat that that their trading partner picks up the contracts of Melancon, Shark and Belt. I imagine we’d get a couple Single A prospects back, but that’s it.

    1. No. Belt is a tradeable contract and if they’re going to go full rebuild, they’re better off holding Shark and Melancon to see if the build some value or if not, let their contracts expire after 2020.

    2. I’m not suggesting a rebuild. Problem is that they can’t bring in a legitimate FA on offense if they have all of these bad contracts.

  7. "I think we're looking for someone who's sort of a 'next-gen' general manager, if you will. Somebody who's going to be head of baseball ops," Baer said. " ... People will say 'new school vs. old school,' people will say 'analytics vs. scouting,' and I think that the new, next-generation general manager is able to do both, and will bring both."

    lol better late than never

I doubt sloppy sabean has the ability to even have a remote idea what that next gen guy looks like

    This will only get worse.

  8. I like Dozier for 2B - he's a player that can hit HRs at ATT because he pulls down that LF line. Stuck with Crawford and Longoria, but could upgrade 1B with Posey and sign Hundley as everyday C backed up by Garcia. Duggar is solid CF, Shaw/Williamson/Slater LF and dream on sign Harper RF to launch splash HRs. Bumgarner, Patrick Corbin, Stratton, Rodriguez and Suarez SPs and Ty Blach, J Fernandez, Moronta, Watson, Smith, Okert and Black in the pen to start with. Eat large chunks of salary to have someone else have Belt, Melancon and Samardjiza on their rosters - Panik and Slater could be trade sweeteners to attach to those trades and not have to cover salary. Bochy seems tired and out of touch with who's hot in his bullpen - that could be Curt Young - could Ron Wotus do the job? Could the job be Buster Posey's one day? Is there a better hitting coach out there?

    1. Have people forgotten about Johnny Cueto?? I'm confused. Likely he comes back next year in time to start the season.

    2. Cueto won't return until the 2020 season.
