Game Wrap 9/16/2018: Rockies 3 Giants 2

The Giants scored 2 earned runs to the Rockies 1, but an error by 1B Austin Slater led to 2 unearned runs to avoided the Giants sweep.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 3, BB, SB(4).  BA= .254.  The first 2 hitters in the Giants lineup, Gregor Blanco and Joe Panik, reached base 5 times in 8 PA's and they each stole a base.  Can't set the table much better than that!  Panik is 8 for 19(.421) over his last 7 games, all singles.

Austin Slater 1B- 1 for 4.  BA= .268.  Slater drove in one of the Giants runs, but made the error that led to 2 by the Rockies.  If you believe in UZR, Slater has struggled on D at 1B but is a solid defensive OF.

Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .115.  Shaw was 1 for 22 with a HR coming in.  He got 2 singles to raise his BA by .070.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.30.  3 Starts in September, 1.47 ERA as Young Dereck continues to impress.

The Giants remained in 12'th place in the Tank Derby.

The Giants go on the road with Andrew Suarez facing Bryan Mitchell in San Diego tomorrow night.

  1. The Holland conundrum: the Giants could very possibly sign him for what he's worth, but will he help them is a "meaningful" way?
He's surelybetter than whoever will be SF's 5th starter (and maybe 3rd and 4th) but he will cost more than the 3 "optional" starters (after Bumgarner and Samardzija) put together and would he make the difference between making the playoffs and not, given the non-pitching holes the Giants will have?

    1. Agree, whether to spend money to keep Holland vs putting that money into offense is a huge question for the Giants coming into the offseason. Assuming they don't trade Bumgarner, the projected rotation without Holland and not counting Samardzija would be 1. Bumgarner. 2. DRod. 3. Andrew Suarez. 4. Chris Stratton. 5. aTyBlach/TylerHerb/ShaunAnderson/Dumpster Dive.

I guess a big part of it is how much the know about Samardzija and how likely they think he is to bounce back. I just don't see how they can count on him for anything, though.

Options: 1. Go hard after Holland and get him re-signed. 2. Sign another FA pitcher like Patrick Corbin. 3. Go dumpster diving again and try to find the next Derek Holland.

I think I favor #3 and put the money toward offense.

    2. i think bumgarner is good as gone this offseason, the emphasis on 2019 is likely to get younger. this offseason may be a bunch of short term contracts and restocking the farm. bum is not gonna be worth a $100-150m contract extension in my opinion. a good dumpster dive project could be drew pomeranz.

    3. I would actually be really surprised if the Giants trade Bumgarner this offseason, much as I think they should if they can get a good return. I think the strategy they will settle on is trying to build a contender centered around him and see where they are midseason. He could then be midseason trade bait if they are out of contention.

    4. my main reason why bum may likely be traded this offseason is the fact that teams may be reluctant to take a brandon belt who is slated to have knee surgery. they may want boost belt's value in the early part of 2019 and try to avoid having to retain salary to trade belt.

  2. There are pitchers on other teams that are effective starters in their mid-late 30's, while home grown Giants' pitchers are like NFL running backs: hit 30 and done. As a comedian might say, What's that about?

    1. Early success resulting in lots of innings pitched by age 30.

  3. Considering the Giants history, they won't "write off" 2019.
Other than youngsters, Bumgarner is about all they have to trade for value, although Belt and Crawford among the 30-and-over crowd that they control could draw some interest but the relief would be in payroll dollars not 4- or 5-tool prospects.
Any of those for any prospects signal a youth movement, and any of the "youts" for old guys mean they think they can contend. The latter also implies mj has reached the FO.
Does anyone who contributes here believe that the gray-beard high priced core are going to reverse the sands of time and cash in one last venue? Will anyone with a 8-digit salary really make a difference anytime in the future?
Getting out from under contracts is as laudable as getting something in return -- will any of the big-buck talent contribute in 2020 and beyond? Wouldn't it be smart to duck 2019, and develop the system, maybe adding FA pieces in the 2020's?
IMO, the Giants bet the farm this year and lost. Admission of failure is a sign of maturity. It happens. It was probably unrealistic but maybe worth it in 2018. Ain't so in 2019.

    1. The Giants are not going to write off 2019. I, for one, think it is possible for them to build a contending team in 2019 and even more so in 2020 2 when Cueto will be back from his TJ surgery.

    2. Supposing the 2018 Giants improve over last year's 68 wins to 78 which would be a fair improvement, could they expect another +10 wins in 2019 in order to compete for the playoffs?
They would have to expect improvements across the outfield (without Cutch), rebounds also across the infield, a recovered-revitalized catcher plus an able backup C, and a (mostly) young but tested pitching staff without Cueto and possibly Shark-less.
      Does anyone believe that?
If the "rebuild" can't quite arrive in 2019, 3 key pitchers are FA's in 2020 (Bum, Smith, and Watson) with the only significant salary relief from this year's $200+/- from Pence, so there isn't a lot of signing money coming available until 2022.
By then we'll all know how good the young studs will be.

    3. 1981 to 1982- 56 Wins to 87.
      1992 to 1993- 72 Wins to 103.
      1996 to 1997- 68 Wins to 90.
      2008 to 2009- 72 Wins to 88.
      2013 to 2014- 76 Wins to 88.

So yeah, it can be done. Greater than 10 Win improvements are not all that uncommon. Everything would have to go right but sometimes it does.

  4. I think they keep Bumgarner - 12 million for one of the best pitchers in recent baseball and find out if he's really on the decline. Then D Rod, Stratton and Suarez and then since no one is going to take Samardjiza's contract anyway he might as well be #5 SP. No need to pony up for Holland except as Samardjiza insurance. Remember there's Ty Blach and (ahem) Tyler Beede lurking around with other AAA possibilities. Gotta believe Mac will be back with Duggar and Slater around the OF - Bullpen could be strong as Melancon, Watson and Smith are looking good again - trade out Strickland! You've got Rule 5 100mph J Fernandez coming back plus Moronta and maybe Ray Black - who needs a hotheaded gas can. Don't give up on 2019! No Cueto? could he make it back for 2019 stretch run?

    1. strickland and dyson will likely be non-tendered, black and fernandez take those two slots in the pen next year.

    2. We'll see. It's not the Giants Way to non-tender guys and put their faith in risky options like Black and Fernandez.

    3. Strickland will be OK.

    4. this is not gonna be a normal offseason, strickland may be better off elsewhere and dyson might be too much money for my liking.
