Game Wrap 9/18/2018: Giants 5 Padres 4

Chris Shaw's 2-run single in the 8'th inning gave the Giants the lead and the bullpen hung on for the W.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3), SB(5).  BA= .215.  Pence has had a terrible season, possibly the last of his career, almost certainly his last as a Giant, but this game brought back old memories as he drove in the Giants first 3 runs with 2-run homer in the 2'nd inning and run-scoring double in the 4'th.

Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(1).  BA= .219.  Shaw hit a flyball single to LF with the bases loaded in the 8'th inning to drive in the tying and winning runs.  After going 1 for his first 22, he is now 6 for 10 in his last 3 games.  Stay hot, kid!  Do the Giants have the stones to put their faith in a starting OF of Shaw, Duggar and Slater for 2019?

Derek Holland LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.57.  I have a feeling Franmil Reyes is going to hit a ton of HR's in his career for the Padres.  His 16'th was a 2-run bomb that ruined Holland's chances at a QS.

Bullpen- 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  Shaky outings for Hunter Strickland and Mark Melancon, but Will Smith recorded his 14'th Save and struck out the side on the 9'th.

The Giants remain in 12'th place in the Tank Derby.  They have now won 4 of their last 5 games.  As long as kids like Chris Shaw are doing the winning, I don't mind them tanking the Tank Derby.

Chris Stratton tries for the series swwweeeep tonight facing Robbie Erlin.

  1. Might be dreaming, but I think I'd like to see if they can overtake Arizona before the end of the season.

Also, I think I'd like them to keep at it with Williamson next year. He was rolling before the whole brick wall thing.

A final note, with regards to Shaw. Willie Mays got off to a 1-26 start for his career. He rallied to win rookie of the year and had a pretty good career, to boot.

    1. the problem with mac is that he will be out of options next year, so he needs to win one of those last roster spots in spring training next march.

    2. Well you need four outfielders so Williamson Duggar Shaw and Slater - Slater possibly the most flexible as a 4th OF but also maybe the best RF starter...do they bid the bank for Harper?

  2. When you strike out 16 times in a 9 inning game, you figure it's a big L, but the Giants managed to get the needed hits and score 5 runs to get the win.

Yes, it's a small sample, so things can/will change but didn't Garcia struggle with the bat at just about all minor league levels? This game can be so unpredictable.

  3. While an OF of Shaw-Duggar-Slater might be interesting and chaotic to watch, unless you are going into full tear down, I think you have to sign/trade for one big OF bat and let Slater/Shaw/Williamson(?) fight for the other OF postion and depth..Of course, Duggar's readiness for the season could change that at the beginning and Gorkys will be the starting CF! :).......At least they have recovered from that ugly losing streak and seem to be giving it their all, bith kids and vets..Good to see......

Surprised we aren't seeing more of Ray Black...And pretty sure management has had their fill of Strickland and will be an ex-Giant by 2019...Shame, he was having a good season until he punched the wall..Hopefully, he can help in a trade..I think the relievers---Smith, Watson, Melancon,Moronta, Black, Dyson? and ?? (rogers? has Okert found it?)---will be fine without him

  4. Does one off field mistake end a guys career?

    1. Well, yes if you break your own pitching hand and affect your own mechanics - mental confidence can be shaken and hard to recover - but if you're clearing out off-field mistake makers you'd have to package Bumgarner in there as well...

    2. There's also that incident where his actions led to the end of Michael Morse's career.

    3. One? The Giants have been waiting for Strickland to "mature" for 5 years - since he got a save in the postseason versus Washington, but also gave up 3 HRs in 3 IP including two to Harper - one of which lead to a BS/Win. "Mature": To harness the fire of competition without exploding or overpitching (and giving up walks or dingers).

If management bring him back then I trust they think the risk/reward is worth the price. If they let him walk and want to go younger/different, then I trust them there too.
