Game Wrap 4/19/2018: D'backs 3 Giants 1

Ty Blach gave the Giants a Quality Start,  but the bats went quiet again as the Giants dropped the rubber match of the 3 game series.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B= 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .255.  Belt homers for the second consecutive game and produced the only run they scored all evening.

Ty Blach LHP- 6 IP. 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/4. ERA= 4.10.  Typical Blach game with unimpressive peripheral numbers but enough soft contact for the QS.

The Loss dropped the 4'th place Giants to 6 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs.  The rest of the division was idle with Colorado in second place, 3 games behind the Snakes. The Dodgers are 4.5 games back and the last place Padres are 7 off the pace.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants move on to LA to face the Angels on the last leg of their 3-city road trip.  Jeff Samardzija comes off the DL to start game 1 facing lefty Andrew Heaney.  I plan to attend this game with family members.

Lots of speculation about the roster with Shark coming off the DL.  Hunter Pence sat out tonight's game with a sore thumb and is expected to take Shark's place on the DL, but Baggs is reporting "informed speculation" that Mac Williamson will be added to the 25-man roster which means someone else would have to go on the DL or be DFA'd to make room.  We'll see.  The Giants offense desperately needs a spark and Mac is the obvious guy most likely to give them one.  I like both Gregor Blanco and Gorkys Hernandez, but neither of them should stand in the way of a Mac promotion if Pence indeed goes on the DL.

  1. What is your take on the fangrahs mock draft 1.0 article that predicts the SF Giants take a college player like Wicheta 3rd baseman Alex Brohm and not a college pitcher. Interesting stuff..

    1. They do say that the Giants are the team they have the least information about. The only thing they seem have strong info on is that they are not going to draft Madrigal, which is interesting because Madrigal is very Giantsy type player. As for Bohm himself, other than being a corner guy which the Giants historically do not draft in round 1, he checks a lot of boxes. He has a record of sustained success in college and a strong Cape Cod League performance. John Barr's reputation is that he knows how to draft bats. If John Barr thinks he is the best available player at #2, I'm OK with it. I am not in the camp that thinks they have to draft a pitcher at that spot or that drafting a pitcher there is their necessarily their priority.

    2. If Bolm is as highly regarded a prospect as Kris Bryant was then the Giants should definitely take him. If not, they need to pick another player who can make an impact. Interesting reading that the strength of this draft is from picks between 20 and 50, so their 2nd pick should be good too.

  2. Bumgarner, Samardzija, and Smith will make the Giants better but will they make them an 86-win team, much less a 90-win team that would possibly guarantee a playoff spot? Currently SF, without the "aces" is a 63-win team. They need to up that y about 25-27 wins.
Posey is playing his weight, Belt and Crawford aren't too far behind what would be expected but the rest of the 12-13 position player roster pretty much sucks. This is not a playoff team even with Bumgarner, Samardzija, and Smith (not to mention Melancon, Dyson, Osich, Law and a couple other disappointments).
Sure, the ship can turn, and there's nearly 90% of the season left, and bad teams can become good, but this season is quickly approaching write-off quality and we may see, perhaps should see, a sell-off that would do Miami proud.
For my money, I'd rather watch the River Cats for a tenth the ticket price!

    1. I basically agree. I think before the season started they had a chance to be a 90+ win team, but absolutely everything had to go right and they had to get off to a strong start. Well, so far almost nothing has gone right and they are off to a weak start. It's awfully hard to play catch up in this league. Hard to envision this team going on a sustained run of .600 baseball even at full strength.

    2. Giants are 7-11 right now. In order to win 90 games, they would have to go 83-61 ROS. Can't say I see them doing that.

    3. I could see Andrew McCutchen having some trade value at the deadline. Maybe Nick Hundley. In order to have a true sell-off that increases organizational talent, they would have to sell high on Bumgarner and Cueto. A healthy Bumgarner should bring back a huge haul of MLB ready prospects. Cueto has less value due to the size and length of his remaining contract but if he continues to pitch like an ace, he should still bring back a couple of solid prospects. I am not sure the Giants would do either. They are just not a sell-high organization.

    4. Tear Down discussion reminds me of last year when the discussion was over who is untouchable and who is mere trade fodder. If we are lucky Mac will be recalled and turned into this year's Bellinger, who carried Dodgers to playoffs. Wishful thinking of course. Austin Slater leads or near top of the leader board in doubles, but no HR's yet. If he keeps his BB/K ratio at a high level and starts hitting the long ball I can see the FO calling him up. If Mac gets called up does that open up a new OF spot in Sacramento?

    5. About a month ago I expressed your "absolutely everything had to go right" and was roundly roasted by some, especially one regular (and excellent) contributor here!
Not to get slammed by everyone, if Buster would accept a trade (I'm assuming a no-trade clause, IDK) he would return as much as anyone other than Bumgarner.
It would sort of, like, trading Williams was and it brought a lot.
Posey certainly has some good seasons left (4-5 WAR) but can't carry a weak team -- he needs assets the Giants don't have.
Leaving Australia today (yourtomorrow) , a month here, country is really nice.

    6. I'm not sure how much trade value Buster Posey has. All GM's are very savvy these days and are looking for excess value. There is very little, if any excess value left in Buster's contract.

  3. Derek Law has already been optioned to Sacramento, so that makes room for Shark. Pence to the DL for the sore thumb with a callup for Mac is now a very plausible scenario.

  4. Might put Melancon on the 60-day DL.

  5. Last year the Giants were a giant fail from the minor leagues up through the parent club. This year, SF pitching has been a bit of a surprise. Fielding is average and, yet again, the runs are as painful to come by as dental surgery. Can't believe I would even take part in a conversation about a team sell-off that includes the MadBum but there it is. As for returning pitchers, probably expecting too much from Samardzija. Might be a lucky sample but Stratton has pitched well while Blach in my opinion defies all logic - that he's at all viable. The minor leagues appear to be showing glimmers of hope though clearly no Posey, Lincecum in the wings, but that said, might be time to give some of these youngsters some meaningful PT.

  6. It's no longer speculation. Pence to DL. WIlliamson to the 25-man.

    1. I am going to the game tonight, so let's hope for Dave Kingmanesque breakout for Big Mac!

    2. Well, You got your wish Doc! Kruk was raving about Mac’s dinger. 114 Exit Velocity, 434 ft. going the other way.

I’ve been a Big Mac doubter. Would be thrilled to eat my words if Mac has figured it all out!
