Game Wrap 4/11/2018: D'Backs 7 Giants 3

For just the second time in San Francisco Giants history, Rookie pitchers made back-to-back starts when Andrew Suarez took the mound in the rubber game of the 3 game series against the D'Backs.  His results were mixed and the Giants offense continued to struggle and the Giants lost the game.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey 1B- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .389.  Buster drove in 2 of the Giants 3 runs with his second dinger.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 7/2.   ERA= 6.75.  By peripheral stats, this was a dominant start and very promising for the future.  Unfortunately Suarez got stung by a couple of dingers and Sam Dyson allowed an inherited runner to score.  He continues to put up peripherals like that, he'll be a terrific big leaguer.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 8.31.  Dyson brought his gas can with him today.

Josh Osich LHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.76.  Nice recovery from a messy appearance yesterday.

Pierce Johnson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.29.  Pierce Johnson continues to show impressive lines.

The Giants ended the day in 3'rd place in the NL West, 3.5 games behind the D'Backs.  The Rockies topped the Padres 6-4 in a game that featured a brawl after a Padres pitcher threw a pitch behind Nolan Arenado.  The Rockies lead the Giants by percentage points while the Padres bring up the rear in the standings, 5.5 games behind the leaders.  The Dodgers are playing tonight and currently sit in 4'th place 4 games behind the D'Backs.

The Giants now start a 10-game roadie in San Diego with Chris Stratton getting the start in game 1 tomorrow night facing Bryan Mitchell.

The first time the Giants started rookies on the mound B2B?  1976 with Rob Knepper followed by Frank Ricelli.

  1. What was result in games in '76 when Knepper and other rookie started?

Yes Dyson is Arsonist. Much Frustration on other ChatBoards with Osich and Dyson.

Dyson / Osich / Pence taking Fan Heat ... if Fans had their way Dyson/Osich would be cut and Pence benched.

Meanwhile as you will write up later Mac and Slater are torching AAA.

    What to do ???

OT - I looked up Christian Arroyo stats today and he is off to a rough start in Minors. The way mac is scalding the ball it reminds me (loosely) of CA's torrid AAA start last year - of course in smaller sample size mac is really ripping cover off the ball.

    1. Osich may have saved himself with the 1.2 IP yesterday. They will probably try to get Dyson back on track for a run like he had last year but but he's strictly back-end of the bullpen for me right now. I'd give Pence until about mid-May to turn it around and see if Mac can sustain his production(no, he's not going to hit .500 for the season!).

    2. He did allow the inherited runner to score, however, though it did not appear on his line...

Regardless, I'm willing to give him another 2 weeks to show out. He's had some good appearances already, and looked stunning in ST. However, his rope is short, and RAY BLACK is just twidling his 100+MPH fastball in Richmond, VA....

    3. People remember when they put their fingers in fire.

Dyson was actually pretty good for the Giants most of last season, he had 30 scoreless appearances out of 38, which is pretty good, but when he did give up runs, he always seemed to give up crooked numbers. I think Bochy just needs to be quicker about figuring out when to take him out and bringing in someone who can put out the fire, and he'll stop drawing Giants fans ire.

Think of it this way, this conversation might not be happening if he didn't give up all those runs in his last two appearances. In his first 36 appearances for the Giants, he had a 2.95 ERA.

    4. ..but he did, plus he's stunk it up so far this season, so we are having this conversation.

  3. Could the Giants trade Dyson and some of his salary for a low prospect and get some CBT relief?
Why would anyone take him even for free?

    1. That ship sailed when they kept Dyson to start the season. They could have dropped him out of spring training and saved a big portion of his salary. Now they owe him the the entire amount unless they can find another team to trade him to who would take on the salary which ain't happening. If he starts pitching well enough for another team to want him, might as well keep him.

  4. They cut into the Giants game to show the highlights of the brawl. Apparently there are going to be some big-time suspensions over it as they've been playing bean-ball with each other the past couple of games.

    1. Not good for me since Nolan Arenado is on my fantasy baseball team.

  5. Seems pretty obvious that Dyson should have been cut in Speinf Training and replaced with Moronta.

I believe the CBT only counts 40 man for luxury tax. If he was outrighted, would he count?

    1. I am not an expert in the vagaries of how the CBT is calculated. All of the estimates I've seen have the Giants right up against it at this time, but I've also read reports that they actually have several $ Million to spare.

    2. The CBT is based on the salaries of the 40 man. I don’t know how a DFA fits in if they’re outrighted. I know Rusney Castillo does not count for the Red Sox which is why they’d never give him another chance. Maybe the DFA only counts against year one. They probably didn’t play for a $10m/AAV on a multi year deal getting cut.
