Game Wrap 4/21/2018: Angels 4 Giants 3

The Giants could not overcome 3 longballs by the Angels.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .259.  Belt gave the Giants an early lead with a 2-run blast in the 2'nd inning.  That would be the last we heard from the Giants offense until the 8'th inning.    The Giants offense fanned 17 times against Garrett Richards and 4 Angels relievers.

Derek Holland LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.98.  Take away the big flies to Jefry Marte, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, Holland pitched a great game.  He gave up a whopping 31 in 135 IP last year, so it's not a 1 game blip.

The top 3 teams in the NL West all won so the Giants slip to 6 games behind the D'Backs while the Rockies and Dodgers trail the leaders by 3 and 4.5 games respectively.  The losing Padres fell to 7 games off the pace.

Johnny Cueto tries for the Giants first series win tomorrow facing Jaime Barria.

Buster Posey was supposed to DH this game for the Giants, but was a late scratch due to a stiff back.

4 comments:

  1. Does Posey's late scratch suggest more than a 1-day stiff back?
Does his 7-game 3 for 21 precipitous fall from .389 to .270 mean more?
Return of all of the missing pitching pieces won't save the season if the Giants have a busted Buster.

  2. In a healthy rotation situation, Holland wouldn't be starting beyond the odd spot-start. Still, it wasn't a disaster and a good offensive day would have carried the game but the Angels pitchers just did a number on the Giants hitters.

  3. That was a winnable game if they added on runs after leading 2-0. They made the Halos pitcher look like Roger Clemons with 11ks in 6 innings! That Halos reliever Midelton looks promising. Hope Duggar progresses with his hitting so they can call him up by June. A little youth would help this team. Hope for the best for that Sox reliever Farquhar who suffered an aneryism in the dugout. Scary stuff.

    1. From what I recall, the umpires were really inconsistent with their strike calls, especially Joe West.

Whom I really can't wait for him to retire, him and Cuzzi are a disgrace to the umpire community, and there really should be a way to remove them based on poor performance, they should not be umpires for life, just like there are no major leaguers for life, at some point, you are bad, and there should be a way to judge that, especially with all the technology we have today.

At worse, just grandfather in the current knuckleheads and all umpires added in the future will be judged by some objective measure, like strikezone calls (very easy today, perhaps pitch framing could be better defined as "which umpires are not good at calling the zone and can be fooled by a catcher").

If Duggar can continue hitting this well, he should be called up sometime in May. The major problem is that if he is called up, an OF will need to be DFAed, so the front office needs to be really sure he is ready. Though, with Duggar and Slater both hitting very well, plus Williamson especially well, perhaps that's not as big an issue as it was on Opening Day.
