Game Wrap 4/10/2018: Giants 5 D'Backs 4

Tyler Beede had mixed results in his MLB debut, but Andrew McCutchen saved the day with his second walkoff hit in 4 games.  Key Lines:

Austin Jackson CF- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .241.  Jackson is 5 for 14 over his last 3 games.

Andrew McCutchen RF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .238.  In addition to his walkoff single in the bottom of the 9'th, Cutch had a huge AB in the the Giants 3-run 6'th inning when he worked a walk after falling behind in the count to drive in a run.  He was eventually thrown out at home plate to end that inning on a a replay ruling. He then drew another walk with 1 out in the 8'th, advanced to 2B on Buster Posey's single, stole 3B and scored on a throwing error by D'Backs C Alex Avila who had a rough night as the the Giants stole 4 bases on the game.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 3, SF.  BA= .375.  Buster's sac fly drove in the Giants second run in the 6'th and his single in the 8'th put McCutchen in position to steal 3B and score.

Hunter Pence LF- 0 for 2, SF.  BA= .206.  Pence drove in the Giants 3'rd run with the Sac Fly in the 6'th, then was replaced by Gorkys Hernandez on a double switch with Josh Osich taking Pence's place in the lineup.

Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 0 for 3, BB. BA= .250.  Kelby started the winning rally with a walk.

Gorkys Hernandez PH/LF- 1 for 2.  BA= .455.  Hernandez started the 3 run rally in the 6'th with a PH single.  At that point, D'Backs SP Patrick Corbin was working on a 2-hit shutout.

Tyler Beede RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.50.  I thought Beede's FB was surprisingly firm, running 93-95 MPH.  He initially had no feel for the breaking ball.  He got some help from the ump on a called 3'rd strike to Alex Avila which helped him get out of the first inning.  He kind of settled down after that, but allowed runners in every inning and threw 87 pitches in his 4 innings of work.  I'd like to see him get another Start and see what he does without the first game butterflies.

Reyes Maronta RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Maronta was the other hero in this game shutting down the D'Backs offense for 2 innings after Beede's early departure.  Maronta has good stuff!

Josh Osich LHP- 0.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 6.75.  It was all too familiar Osich as he went from an 0-2 count on leadoff hitter, Jarrod Dyson, to 3-2 then gave up a single when he had to throw a strike.  You cannot get to 3 balls in Jarrod Dyson when he is leading off an inning, you just can't!

Hunter Strickland RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.50.  I guess there is no shame in giving up a HR to Paul Goldschmidt, but it cost Strick a Blown Save.  Cutch turned him into a winner with his walkoff hit.

The Win evened the Giants record at 5-5 and put them in sole possession of 2'nd place in the NL West behind the D'Backs.  The Rockies lost to the Padres to fall into 3'rd place, 3.4 games back and ahead of the Dodgers by percentage points after the Bad Guys blanked the A's 4-0.  The Padres remained in last place, 4.5 games off the pace despite their win over the Rockies.

Word is the Giants will have another SP make his MLB debut tomorrow as Johnny Cueto was placed on the 10 day DL with an ankle sprain.  Andrew Suarez is slated to graduate from the Taxi Squad to make his first MLB start.

  1. Beede: He was brutal to watch. I kept thinking the way he's missing the plate he's going to hit some one. Sure enough... Anyway, as wild as he was, he kept fighting through it and, in the end, he didn't let it get away and that was good enough.

After his start was over I went to bed and missed the rest of what turned out to be a pretty exciting game.

  2. You can say it's early, but it's the 3rd year that osich just gives up big runs whenever he comes in. Don't think it's going to happen for him here, time to get him off the big league roster

    1. It's early. His HR% is 33% right now along with a .545 BABIP. That's really an abnormal (for him) performance data set.

  3. Beede didn’t look like he knew where the ball was going. His change up was falling off arm side all night. When he got to two strikes, he wasn’t even making competitive pitches. 2 walks to the opposing pitcher and both after getting ahead with 2 strikes.

    1. Agree, but I think the positive takeaway is the fastball which was stronger than I expected and was afraid it might be(I think I still have PTSD from Brad Hennessey coming up and throwing 88 MPH). I chalk up the breaking ball problems to nerves from his first MLB start. I saw things to build on.

    2. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised to see a 95 on the gun. I hope his start Sunday has more consistent mechanics.

  4. Early thoughts:

Team has way more hunger than I saw last year. Cutch in particular is starting to help Giants build "we're not done until we're done" attitude.

Starters and Bullpen have been better than one could ever dream considering that two starters are out (and now Cueto). Yeah, I get that the young kids are not lighting the world on fire, but they're keeping us in games. No blow outs (yet).

I'm liking what we're seeing in the minors relative to relief in the future. Mac could be a shot in the arm and I think if we don't tank, and Pence really stays down, there will be some action there. Of course Pence got hot at spring's end, and he's streaky, so maybe he turns it around. I do think we're building the right way--Beede's game is a step in a positive direction. Today is Suarez. Blach has done great against Kershaw. As long as we're not buyers at the mark, I'm thinking even if this team is not great this year the youngns are on their way.

  5. On Goldschmidt's HR in the 9th, Strickland missed the low-outside target by a foot and a half. Center of the plate, above the belt. So, OK. But then he throws the exact same pitch to Pollock. The next pitch, I believe. Pollock lined out to Gorky's, who made a nice play. But, solid contact. It's that second pitch, the one to Pollack, that makes me question whether Strickland, even with his slider, will ever be an effective closer.

Hard to fault McCutchen, but man, he missed another catchable ball to help the Phils tie the game in the 7th. His routes are really sketchy right now.
