Spring Training Game Wrap 3/16/2015: Reds 10 Giants 4

When I saw that Chris Stratton and Kyle Crick were being sent out to face the Reds home lineup on the road, I said to myself, "this might not go well."  It didn't as the Reds pounded the Giants with 4 HR's in a game that was not as close as the score looks.  Key Lines:

Justin Maxwell(CF)- 0 for 4, 3 K's.  BA= .200.  Maxwell did not bring his Silver Hammer down in this game.

Carlos Triunfel(PH-DH)- 1 for 1, HR(1).  BA= .300.  Triunfel was once one of the hottest prospects in the Mariners system, mainly due to a misunderstanding of the age vs level metric.  He's auditioning for a AAA berth here.

Mac Williamson(LF)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, HBP.  BA= .333.  Williamson is having a fine spring.  OK to keep in in big league camp as long as Boch can find AB's for him.

Joaquin Arias(SS)- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .176.  Don't count out Arias for a roster spot.  In fact, do it at your peril! He's been an important part of the Giants success over the past several years.

Chris Stratton(RHP)- 2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.40.  Remarkably little damage out of 7 hits.  That is probably not a repeatable skill.

Tyler Rogers(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00. Sidearming RHP brought over from minor league camp for an extra arm.  He should be going to Richmond this year.

Kyle Crick(RHP)- 2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.75.  2 dingers in the 5 hits.  Kid's had a nice spring, but still needs some salt.

One of those dingers by the Reds was by former Giants farmhand Chris Dominguez.

The Giants take on the D'Backs today for the 3'rd time in 4 games with Madison Bumgarner looking to stretch out a bit on the mound.  Wednesday will be on off day.

  1. Given the numbers of batters faced (with all the hits), the silver-lining is only one walk (by Crick).

    1. Dry, hot, windy, very tough conditions to pitch in too.

    2. If we just look at the numbers, things look bad for Crick, but thanks for that game condition background.

Gotta to learn to adjust to your environment, augment and employ your full arsenal for different conditions - that's another lesson for the kid.

Does it seem like Bochy is minimizing veteran appearances because we had a very extended 2014 season?

    3. I think it is likely that Bochy is keeping the kids around longer to take it easy I the vets due to the short offseason. Posey in particular seems to be used sparingly.

    1. I agree. See my comments in tonight's Game Wrap. I think we've all suspected that he has not been right for awhile now.

  3. The news on Pagan is not good. This is a big opportunity for Brown or Maxwell to step up.It's gonna be interesting to see what OF'ers are put on waivers.Strickland looks like he's starting to settle in.If he keeps this up.He should be on the opening day roster.
