Down on the Farm: 7/12/2013

AAA  Sacramento River Cats beat the Fresno Grizzlies 9-3:

Jeff Francoeur(LF)- 2 for 5.  BA= .222.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .295.

Rumor has it that Frenchy will get the callup today.  I'm pretty sure I don't want that with the way Tanaka has put a spark in the Giants.  Francoeur has not exactly raked in the PCL.  Dominguez stays hot.  Chris hit .318 in June and is hitting .333 so far in July.

AA  Game 1  Bowie Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-2:

I"m tellin' ya.  Nothing to see here!  Osich got pounded again and his ERA stands at 14.54.

AA  Game 2  Bowie Baysox blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-0:

Even less to to see in this one.  Squirrels managed just 2 hits.

High A  San Jose Giants pounded the Visalia Rawhide 12-2:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 BB, SB(17).  BA= .259.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(17), BB.  BA= .274.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(11), BB.  BA= .258.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 2.63.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Lofton is hitting .390 over his last 10 games and .400 in July after his average cratered in June as he hit just .165.  Mac stays hot.  Another Dominant Start for Blach.  Wonder when he might get promoted?

Low A  Charleston River Dogs out hit the Augusta Greenjackets 8-7:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 1 for 4, BB, SB(41).  BA= .273.
Trevor Brown(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .267.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 2 for 4, SB(17), Sac.  BA= .307.
Andrew Cain(LF)- 2 for 4, HR(5), SB(12).  BA= .240.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.96.

Trevor Brown's BA has gone .207, .243, .293 in April, May and June.  He's hitting .417 so far in July.  Andrew Cain is hitting .308/.400/.654 so far in July.  Still not what you want to see from Stratton pitching at this level.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Spokane Indians 6-2:

Brian Ragira(1B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .278.
Shilo McCall(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .258.
Eugene Escalante(C)- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .262.
Chase Johnson(RHP)- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Raymundo Montero(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.57.

Looks like the Giants are going to try their 3'rd round draft pick as a starter.  His arm should be fresh after getting buried by the coach at Cal Poly SLO.  If he can pitch like this in a starting role, kudos to the Giants scouts for figuring that out!  McCall continues to hold his own against mostly older competition.

Rookie AZL  Dodgers edged the Giants 4-3:

Ryder Jones(DH)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .333.
Brett Kay(2B)- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .324.
Matt Young?(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Carlos Alvarado(RHP)- 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.53.
Eury Sanchez(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

I'm pretty sure Matt Young is a mistake in the boxscore and the roster.  Matt Young is an 18 yo RHP from Glendora HS who was drafted by the Florida Marlins.  The Giants drafted Pat Young, a college pitcher out of Villanova, in the 13'th round.  I"m pretty sure this must be Pat Young.

DSL Giants stopped the Reds 6-5:

Nicol Parra(CF, 18 yo)- 2 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB)10).  BA= .267.
Nathanael Javier(3B, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .202.
Eusebio Encarnacion(RHP, 18 yo)- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.86.
Jose Morel(RHP, 19 yo)- 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.35.

  1. I believe all of Osich's runs scored after he was pulled from the game, and two of the runs Stratton allowed came after he was pulled as well. So in a way, their outings weren't as bad as they seemed.

    1. A WHIP of 1.44 by Stratton in this game is not stellar pitching.

  2. Here is a shocker, Chris Heston was DFA. Don't understand it because the org is thin in SP in the upper level of the system. I like the SP on the San Jose team though led by Crick, Blackburn, Blach, and Mejia. Escobar is pitching tonight for Richmond.

    1. The Giants probably feel like Hesto Presto won't get claimed by another team and is willing to gamble that he won't. I'm not convinced his stuff plays at the MLB level anyway.

  3. Blach pitched very well in Visalia last night. He has a different style of delivery as he stands square facing the plate to begin his windup and then shifts his left foot back to the rubber and takes a step forward with his right foot. It is very different from when he pitches out of the stretch. He seems to be much more comfortable pitching from the windup and will have to work more on pitching from the stretch. He was throwing both is fastball and off-speed pitches for strikes and the majority of his strikeouts were on swings and misses by the Rawhide. Jose Casilla and Derek Law each had 1,2,3 innings.

The offense was firing on all cylinders. The homerun by Mac was a towering shot directly down the left field line. It was so high it was difficult to determine if it was fair or foul. Jeff Arnold put the game away with a 3-run homerun to right center field in the 8th inning. APGiantsfan

  4. Good news is that Tanaka and Frenchy are platooning in LF, and that makes sense, Tanaka was being stifled by AAA lefties, so it makes sense to make him sit for MLB lefties.
