Game Wrap 5/19/2023: Giants 4 Marlins 3

The Giants broke through for 3 runs off reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara RHP in the 6'th inning for a 4-2 lead and held on for their fourth win in a row.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 0 for 3, BB.  BA= .264.  LMWJ did what he does best which is lead off the 6'th inning with a walk that started the winning rally.  Thairo Estrada 2B followed with a dribbler that Alcantara should have held but instead he threw it into the RF corner to put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with no outs.  J. D. Davis DH and Michael Conforto  LF followed with Sac Flies.  Mitch Haniger LF kept it going with a single, Mike Yastrzemski CF walked and Casey Schmitt 3B smashed a single off the SS to drive in what proved to be the winning run.

Conforto and Haniger teamed up for with a 2-out single/double combo to produce the Giants first run and lead in the 4'th inning.  Conforto has been hitting better for awhile.  Hopefully this is a breakthrough game for Haniger.  The Giants need those two to produce if they are going to comeback from their slow start to the season.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.09.  Tony D pitched shutout ball for 5 innings and took a 1-0 lead into the 6'th inning but faltered to fall behind 2-1.  Scott Alexander LHP came in and put the fire out to keep it close and set up the comeback in the bottom of the inning.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 2.31.  After John Brebbia RHP pitched a scoreless 7'th inning, Taylor Rogers gave up a HR to Bryan De La Cruz in the 8'th to close the score to 4-3. Tyler came in to get the final out of that inning then pitched a 1, 2, 3 9'th for the Save.

Logan Webb RHP tries to keep the winning going tomorrow against Braxton Garrett LHP.

Churn Watch:

There was a flurry of roster moves before the game.  Ross Stripling RHP and Joey Bart C went on the IL with back and groin tightness respectively.  It may or may not be coincidence that both were struggling in their respective roles.  Replacements came in the form of Ryan Walker RHP and Patrick Bailey C whose contracts were selected from the AAA Sacramento River Cats which required two corresponding 40-man roster moves.  Heliot Ramos OF was recalled from AAA Sacramento and placed on the 60-day IL with an oblique strain and Cal Stevenson OF was designated for Assignment.  Tough break for Young Heliot!

  1. Remember the ??? when FZ drafted Bailey – it was "why did he do that, we have Bart coming up" or words to that effect...

    1. Not a ton of better options maybe Jordan Walker or Garret Mitchell will end up as better major leaguers. Not a great draft in general looking at the first round. Bailey seems like he may be better defensively than Bart but they both struggle with the bat which makes taking either of them in the first round disappointing. Part of FZ’s struggles drafting has been where they have drafted and the quality available at that spot. Still would like to see someone who is considered one of the smartest people in baseball to find more superstars through the draft, trades, and international signings. He has found some nice players but absolutely zero superstars.

    2. It's looking like Kyle Teel will be selected before the Giants #16 choice but it not, I don't think it's a stretch to envision FZ taking another college C in the first round.

    3. If you want superstars in the draft you better be drafting in the top 5 or at least 10 to have more than about a 1 in 1000 chance. Even with high picks it's still no more than 1 out of 5 or 10 chance. Yes, Brian Sabean and his team managed a trifecta in the late 2000's with Timmy, Buster and MadBum. Sabes never came close to anything else like that in his entire tenure which ran for 20 years. Was he lucky with that run? Well, yes he probably was but he was also crushingly unlucky when AFW became a trifecta of bust.

  2. Is an Outfield "glut" coming?
Conforto and Haniger have sizable contracts for next year. Haniger has a $15M player option for 2025.
YtY and Beaty are under control through 2025.
Slater's final year of arbitration is 2024.
Gonzales, Johnson, and Ramos don't enter arbitration for years.
Matos (40-man roster) is in AAA, raking @ 21 yo
Brown (24), Meckler (23), and Munguia (24) are in AA
McCray (22) and Pomares (22) are in A.
And other young and brash who show up in Doc's Down on the Farm: Bericoto, Higgins, Hilson, Howell, Dupere, and not-so-young like Coulter and Aldrete
They're not all going to make it to SF but that's an impressive crop.

    1. Eh, they will be lucky to get 1 or 2 MLB starters out of that crowd. I'm most optimistic about Matos and he's far from can't miss.

    2. They would probably be happy to develop 1 or 2 MLB starting outfielders. They've had a long drought developing starting outfielders.

  3. How dependent are the Giants on good pitching?
They are 19-4 when holding opponent to 4 or fewer runs
They are 1-2 when opponent scores 5 runs
They are 1-4 when opponent scores 6 runs
They are 0-13 when opponent scores 7 or more runs
In total, they are 2-19 when opponent scores 5 or more runs
They are 7-13 when 10 or more runs are scored (total for both teams)
They are 1-2 in extra innings
They are 1-3 in walk-off games
The Giants are not a shoot-out team
The Giants usually win when they get good pitching

Giants are 1-5 in Manaea's starts. Although they are 3-0 in his relief appearances, he has given up at least 1 earned run in every appearance.
Giants are 2-2 in Stripling's starts but he was effective in only one of them and poor in his 1 relief appearance.
They both have negative WARs. Taylor Rodgers also has a negative WAR but he has been light-out effective (1 earned run) in his last 13 appearances.
Maybe Manaea and Stripling can turn their seasons around, too. Or two.
