  1. Two questions:

First, can someone remind me what the deal is with Ryan Murphy? He had a big year in 2021 and, if I recall correctly, ran into injury problems last year. Is he still a prospect?

Second, why does no one ever describe Ricardo Genoves as a prospect? I have heard him described as a solo, defensive, catcher, and he seems to have hit up and down, at least enough. I seem to recall I am qualifying as a minor league, free agent, and was surprised that he resigned with a Giants.

    1. IMO, Ryan Murphy has always been fringe prospect. I've received some criticism over the years for not ranking him higher on my Giants Top 50 Prospects lists. A college pitcher with borderline stuff and advanced pitchability who could dominate at lower levels.

    2. Re. Genoves: I've just never seen enough bat in the minors to make me think he can hit at all in the majors. Might eventually have some sort of MLB career as a backup catcher.

    3. Geonoves got some serious helium late in 2019 and he made Top 30 (MLB) in 2020 & 2021 peaking in the mid-20s. But in 2022 he only hit .215 and in 2023 is only hitting .265 in the PCL which isn't that great. For reference’s sake, there are 38 players hitting .300 or better in the PCL and just 13 in majors, despite that there are 3x the players in the majors.

He may make it as a back-up, defensive catcher, but I don't think he's ever going to be a full-time starter on merit. Injury replacement, perhaps.

  2. Susan Slusser mentioned that she's heard talk of Keaton Winn callup in the 2nd half also. He throws a mid 90's fastball and a nasty split finger baseball. Sounds good! The main thing I'd like to see is Vaun Brown and Marco Luciano stay healthy all season. Can't hold the slow start by Luciano against him. He's missed a lot of development time due to the back injury. Vaun Brown doesn't play every day yet, but he does make hard contact when he does. 2022 1st round pick Reggie Crawford was assigned to San Jose. That's interesting!

  3. I've been thinking a lot about Heliot Ramos since they put him on the 60-day IL. With this 60-day IL stint it's looking like yet another bust season. I know he's still young, but he hasn't hit well since A+ (2019) and now he's losing another year of development. At this point I'm not even sure he's going to be on the Top-30 prospect list when they do the mid-season reordering or ever make the majors as 2019 was a long time ago and since then he's hit .239 in AA and .244 in AAA and .152 in his limited time in the bigs.

But I remind myself -- that's why they call them prospects. It's just disappointing as it's been so long since we have, from start-to-finish, developed a quality OFer. I was hoping he would break the cycle of disappointment.

  4. Reggie Crawford made his debut with the San Jose Giants last night as the DH. He went 0 for 3. He is listed on the SJ Giants roster as a pitcher. APGiantsfan

  5. If Villar gets his confidence so he does press and swing and miss at so many pitches, he can still help.
Or is he the classic AAAA?

    1. I'll guess Villar has an Adam Duvall type career.

  6. There are 2 halves in AAA Pacific: (1) high and dry and (2) more or less "normal" although the humidity between Sacramento and Sugar Land is pretty extreme, maybe 60% or so.
Statistics should be available for aggregate games played in both halves.
What happens in the high/drive five need to be split from the low/wet five to get an appreciation of the players potential.
Reno to Sacramento, only 2 hours apart by car, are separated by 4,500 feet of elevation.
What happens in Reno should stay in Reno.
