Game Wrap 9/25/2022: Giants 3 D'Backs 2

The Opener gambit played out as drawn up and the lineup sputtered to life in the 8'th inning.

J.D. Davis 1B- 4 for 5, 2 2B, HR(10).  BA= .250.  Davis had a great day at the plate. Ironically his only Run/RBI came on a solo HR in the 9th inning which was the game winner.  His slash line since coming to the Giants:  .271/.371/.514 with 6 HR in 124 PA.  He made some nice plays at 1B too.

Evan Longoria PH/3B- 1 for 1.  BA= .243.  Longo's bases-loaded single in the 8'th inning gave the Giants their first runs of the game and a 2-1 lead.

Ford Proctor 2B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .200.  Proctor gets his first big league knock in front of his family.  That's always a nice moment but if it happens too often, it's not generally a good sign for the team.

Scott Alexander LHP and Jarlin Garcia LHP pitched the first 2.2 innings to set the table for bulk-innings pitcher Jakob Junis RHP- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  Doval got the Save despite giving up a run.  Exactly how the Opener is envisioned.

The Giants get a day off before starting their final homestand.  Logan Webb RHP opens the homestand on Tuesday facing the Rockies and German Marquez RHP They have 9 games left with the final 3 in San Diego against the Padres.  They need to go 6-3 to finish at .500. What would you like to see them accomplish in the final 9 games?

  1. No more Wade leading off with his .193/.296/.356/.653 slash line. He's out of options but unlikely anyone would pick him up if DFA'd. Same is true for YtY: .212/.306/.384/.690.
Play Proctor, the V's, and maybe Johnson in CF: see what they can do.
Seems the trade for Davis and the pitchers is a big winner with our old fried Darin Ruf slashing .152/.216.197/.413 for the Mets in SSS. Braves are but 1 game behind in loss column - Cohen's gonna go nuts if NY drops out of 1st: 3-game set between contenders in Atlanta starting Friday.

    1. Wade kept shaking his left hand and grimacing last night while going 0 for 5. Not sure why the training staff would not notice that and get him out of there. Per Fangraphs both Wade Jr and YtY are arbitration eligible this winter. I am not seeing much reason to tender either a contract.

    2. I don't believe Wade has ever really recovered from his somewhat vague knee injury during spring training. Even that nice (game-winning, really) catch he made in Arizona was odd -- he was favoring a knee and running oddly. It's a shame because he's a nice, serious young fellow who worked hard to make an impact last year. I'd predict a DFA but wouldn't be upset by re-signing him with invitation to spring, if they think he can pull himself together physically.

BTW - I'd sure like to see Bryce Johnson get called back and get some real at-bats these last two series. He has been treated like an afterthought.

  2. Doc, finishing at 500 would be nice.
I would like to see Yaz add to his resume ie hits/runs/homers/move beyond .225 BA, continue to show the glove >> to at least earn 1 more year.
I like Joc, but Kap does not seem predisposed to giving him the majority of starts in left. Sadly move on from Wade>> it was very painful watching his at bats.
Want to see Estrada add to his homer totals and a few more SB'sHe is fun to watch. See Wilmer hit some more big flies.
Watch more of Young, Alexander earn roles for next year.
Watch Craw field >> he still has it.
Villar, Davis continue to show their potential
I am sticking to the remainig 9 games hopes.
I am majorly waiting with baited breathe >> to see Farhan make a major move.
Not expecting to see Judge anytime soon.
I think there major move has to be firming up the starting rotation.
Think there are asonable infield / outfield adds available.
FYI I do not see a future with Ramos in the outfield > bat just not there.

    Richard in Winnipeg

    1. Good list. I tend to agree on Ramos. I think he has 1 more year left to try to get it together against higher level pitching. A few MLB PA's here at the end of the season won't change that. I am curious to see a few PA's from this Taylor Jones who I never heard of before the Giants acquired him. In my 6'7" position player who has hit at AA and AAA automatically has a high enough ceiling that I am willing to invest a significant number of MLB PA's to see if he has any chance at all of reaching it.

    2. Too early to give up on Ramos.
He's had a lot of trouble staying on the field but he just turned 23 this month.
      2019 wasn't bad at 19 in A+, 2020 hurt everybody, 2022 wasn't a disaster -- he was -4.6 years age difference.
Start 2023 again in Sac, he's still young. Probably not the phenom hoped for, but he is a hunk!

    3. While I don't expect a major free agent like Judge to sign with the team, I can't count it out either reading about FZ saying this will be a big off-season and more importantly the owner openly referring to the power hitter in the Bronx (Judge) and the star shortstops in the upcoming free agent market. All I ask is that they be aggressive improving the team, and they'll have a chance if the owner pushes for a big signing. Interesting news in the minors that Casey Schmidt (3rd base) was promoted to AAA for the last week of their season. He sounds like a very promising prospect who could help them next year.
