Over the course of he illustrious career, Madison Bumgarner has had a handful of disaster starts. As near as I can remember, he's bounced back with a strong start after every one. His last start against Cincinnati, while maybe not quite a disaster start, at least came close. As we have come to expect, he bounced back in this game with a vintage MadBum performance while out dueling Jake DeGrom who is widely considered a Cy Young Award candidate this season. Key Lines:
Steven Duggar CF- 0 for 2, BB, SB(5). BA= .244. Duggar used his speed to score the Giants first run with a walk and SB. He then took 3B on a groundout and came home on a PB.
Austin Slater LF- 1 for 4. BA= .280. Slater scored the Giants second run when he singled in the 4'th inning, went to 2B on a walk to Nick Hundley and scored on a double by Madison Bumgarner.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 2.88. Again, a vintage MadBum performance with the RBI double thrown in for good measure.
Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(11). ERA= 1.91. Will Smith's comeback from TJ surgery and emergence as a reliable Closer is one of the nice stories of the season, at least for me.

The D'Back and Rockies both won, so the the 4'th place Giants remain 9 games out of first place in the NL West. The Dodgers lost again to the Cardinals and slip to 4.5 games off the pace in 3'rd place. Am I a bad person for being really happy about that?

The Giants return to AT&T Park where Young Dereck Rodriguez comes of the the DL to face Drew Hutchison.

Dodgers losing: How could being happy for Dodger misfortune make you a bad person? Feeling sorry for the Dodgers is like feeling sorry for Stalin or Hitler... Good people just don't do that...
ReplyDeleteSince you mentioned Stalin and Hitler.
DeleteI feel for the Dodgers like I feel for your President Bonespurs!
Richard in Winnipeg ( Canada > not the greatest nation in the world; just the most polite!! :) )
Dodgers and Dbacks were idle yesterday, but yes, a Dodger loss is always cause for celebration.
ReplyDeleteFangraphs had an article talking about MLB teams' clutch performance. Basically, how both pitchers and hitters perfom in high leverage situations.
ReplyDeleteHighest clutch performance this year, by far, is by the Seattle Mariners. Worst, by far, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Giants, BTW, are 3rd best in the majors.
I think this is why the 2018 Giants are mostly seen favorably by fans. They've outperformed expectations at times when it mattered most.
