5 comments:

  1. Joe Panik has had an uneven 2018, great stretches (LA!) and miserable stretches, unable to get untracked from injuries.
He finished 2017 strong after returning from his concussion -- for the month of September (24 games), he slashed .375/.424/.511/.936 (cherry picking: September 2-29 22 games .418/.461/.570/1.030).
Although his fielding has not returned to 2016's GG, it has picked up from last year playing through his 2018 injury problems.
If Ryan Howard continues his development, he's on track to compete in 2019, a RHB conterpart?
What to do about the other guy, super flash Alen Hanson? Nice problem to have.

  2. Jason Bahr: tremendous year for Augusta, then 3 good outings for San Jose in the A+ Cal League. Not quite so in 4 starts in the A+ Carolina League where he's been about the same but with less game level success.
Fortunately he'll be in the AL where we won't be so reminded as we may with Crick and Reynolds (who has picked his game up substantially). We'll see Crick this weekend, in the wrong uniform.

  3. In the "for what it's worth department" from RotoWire Staff Aug 6, 2018:

Jeff "Samardzija (shoulder) is hopeful to start a minor-league rehab assignment sometime next week, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
"Samardzija tossed a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday, and he's slated to throw again Thursday. If all goes well, he'll pitch against live hitters Aug. 13, per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. Samardzija would then embark on a rehab assignment after facing live batters, as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks. Though a return is in sight, he'll have to clear a few more hurdles before coming off the shelf."

Like, ah, getting through an entire inning or two of meat in AAA?

Seems that the Pirate series could tell a lot:
Giants are 11th in the post season race ahead of the 4 teams who are all but eliminated. One of the teams they're behind is Pittsburgh but a 3 of 4 series would tie them with the Pirates at 60-59.
Well, tied for 10th is better than dead last!
Washington, winning today, is next on the ladder, 2 games ahead. They're on their way to Chicago for three, so there's a chance of making up some ground on them, while not doing the same on the Cubs.
Of course it's early to scoreboard watch, but it's not too early to start winning and closing gaps: with 47 games to go, the Giants must pass either 6 teams (of the 10 ahead of them) or ALL three teams in the West ahead of them, making up 6+ games on teams with winning records.
Will 87-75 .537 (going 30-17 .638) do it? With current won-loss records of the teams ahead of them, it wouldn't! Either both LA and AZ must play less than .500, or some combination of 3 or 4 teams "in" or "close" have to play under .500 -- it's baseball, anything is possible.
Longoria and McCutchen will HAVE to do what the Giants hoped they would and a lot of young guys can't run out of gas.

Place your bets, gentlemen, Sportsline gives them a 2.2% chance.
