Game Wrap 8/17/2018: Reds 2 Giants 1(11 Innings)

The Giants cobbled together a strong combined pitching effort in place of the injured Dereck Rodriguez but wasted it in the end as their offense remained mired in a team wide slump.  Key Lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 3 for 5.  BA= .257.  Cutch drove in the Giants only run after a Steven Duggar double in the 3'rd inning.  He reached base 2 other times but for naught as the Giants could not sustain another rally.

Casey Kelly RHP- 4.1 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.69.  Kelly was pitching in front of his dad who is the Reds Bench Coach.  He gave up a lot of hits and had to work his way out of trouble in every inning.  but kept the Giants in the game long enough to give the bullpen a fighting chance.  He seems to be skilled at holding runners and delivering the ball quickly out of the stretch.  His pickoff of Billy Hamilton in the first inning and Buster Posey's throwout of Jose Peraza trying to steal 2B in the 5'th were key moments in the game.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.10.  A dominant appearance by Moronta who has become a major force in the bullpen and whose contract is controlled by the Giants for years into the future.

Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.91.  Black struck out the side in the 10'th inning, but fell behind Phillip Ervin leading off the 11'th.  I don't know if Ervin was guessing that Black would try to steal a strike with a curveball in the zone or if Black tipped his pitch, but that's what Ervin got and he was ready for it as it came in with just a bit of hang time.  Walkoff dinger.

The D'Backs and Dodgers are still playing at this post time, but they are both leading their respective games while the Rockies already topped the Braves 11-5, so the Giants will likely end the night 7 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs.

Madison Bumgarner tries to even the series tomorrow evening with Matt Harvey taking the mound for the Reds.

  1. I don't blame Bochy for sounding unhappy with the offense calling it borderline ridiculous how often they are getting shutdown. They have scored 3 runs or less in 9 out of the past 13 games. I expected more from the offense and have been surprised how average MLB pitchers have made it look easy shutting down The Giants. The pitching has been good which makes losing all these close low scoring games frustrating to listen to. It must have been cool but hard for Casey Kelly's dad to watch him pitch from the opposing dugout.

  2. Kelly: I read an article on Kelly right after he came up. It's a bit old, but one of the criticisms of him is that while he has a lot of talent, he has very little deception thanks to his smooth, simple 3/4ers delivery. I kind of see what they're talking about as you can pick that ball up when it's in his hand still. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/article/11491/future-shock-scouting-casey-kelly/

Looking at his history... And how easy the Reds hit him last night, I don't see a big future for him unless something really changes.

  3. July 1st @ 45-40 was the high mark of the consistently .500 Giants who undoubtedly will win tonight to even their record at 62-62.
    From the "who's going to be 4 & 5" in preseason, it's now "who's going to be 2 & 3 & 4 & 5"?
With endless SP problems, the Giants are fortunate to be a .500 team -- no realistic person can believe they will get from 1-under to 10-over in the 39 remaining games short of going on a 9-game winning streak against the NL's bottom dwellers before meeting the division leading D'backs at the end of August.
    That would be a miracle!
Last night continued the 2018 sleep-walking somnolent season with McCutchen "awakening" from a 10-game 4-33 slumber to get 3 hits and the only RBI the Giants could muster. And Joe picked up a couple hits -- he's 5-13 in his last 4 starts -- which gets him to .240!
The rest of the team? 3-30 and 10 Ks against such a fine Cincinnati staff.
This is not fun to watch!
