Game Wrap 8/20/2018: Giants 2 Mets 1(13 Innings)

The Giants got 8 shutout innings from their bullpen and finally got a runner home from scoring position in the 13'th inning with a lot of help from the Mets defense.  Key Lines:

Derek Holland LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.75.  For awhile it looks like Holland might be a 1-0 loser, but the Giants pushed across a run in the 7'th on a series of gifts from the BABIP gods.

Bullpen- 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  Mark Melancon went 2 innings with 1 hit and 3 K's.  That might be his strongest appearance of the season!  The Giants desperately need to get something from their investment on Melancon over the next 2 seasons.  Maybe he is finally getting healthy?  Derek Law overcame 2 walks in the 12'th inning to give the Giants a chance to take the lead in the 13'th.  He then shut down the Mets for a save, eve though he does not get credit for a Save.

The Win allowed the Giants to gain a game on the idle D'Backs, so they are 8 games out of first place in the NL West in 4'th place.

Chris Stratton gets another chance to get his season and career back on track tomorrow evening facing lefty Steven Matz. Stratton credits Ryan Vogelsong with helping him with a mechanical adjustment that enabled him to pitch well in his last 2 AAA Starts.

  1. McCutchen: Word has it (Bags) that he's been placed on revocable waivers.

Law: After he escaped the 12th inning I went to bed. I just figured the 13th would get him and the Giants' hitters were clearly not hitting.

  2. Do managers matter?
St Louis moved into 3-way tie for 2nd WC (.5 from 1st WC), as they have gone 22-11 since firing Matheny (8-2 last 10). Same team, different results.
Giants win 1st game on quest to win 15 in-a-row and be relevant with no player in top 100 fWAR and without a full roster of 25 players above 0.2 fWAR

    1. Not the same team. They made a couple of trades including getting rid of Tommy Pham who'd had a major collapse. Their short-stop got healthy and came back and finally started hitting. They called up Harrison Bader who ranks as the NLs best CFer (defensively).

Also, Matt Carpenter went on a major power-tear finishing July with a .774 slugging and is at .616 slugging for August, which includes 19 hRs in those two months, which is 5 more than McCutchen or Belt have given us all season. Add in his .447/.387 OBPs for the past two months... That's a big lift.

And it didn't stop there. They were very busy in restructuring the bullpen. They got rid of the under-performers including the release of Greg Holland and the rest of his $$$$. Others were sent down. They traded for a RP. They got another off waivers. They brought a prospect up. The purchased the minor league contract another.

And, yes, I think the manager has made a difference. But things have been different since the firing beyond the 'same old players suddenly playing better.'

    2. Cardinal's rebuild continues. They moved Martinez from 1B where he was a defensive nightmare to LF. And they're acquiring Matt Adams off waivers from the Nationals to get a 1B. Adams has 18 HR in 277 PAs with a .510 SLG. Not sure if he's going to back-up Carpenter or if Carpenter is going back to 3B, but since the firing of Matheney the FO has been 'all-in' trying to fix the roster and get back into the playoffs.

    3. So , for St Louis, it's the (new) manager AND the General Manager rescuing a season that was slipping away. Obviously, if they maintain this pace, they're in and might even catch the Cubs.
The Nationals throw in the towel officially before the Giants, at least they're doing some off-loading.
Maybe the Gs problem is nobody wants the guys SF offering up, including, according to rumors flying Wednesday afternoon, Andrew McCutchen.

    4. Mike Matheny has made a lot of very poor in-game decisions over the years and was considered to be a poor manager by just about everyone except Kruk and Kuip. It's not a big surprise they are performing better with a new manager.

  3. Of course they won an a run scored with an error - a lineup of limp bats like no other. They do not deserve a playoff berth. Mr. Gobachav - Tear Down that (Lineup).

    Let the rebuild begin!

  4. Just read a great article about the A's success this year - they lead the majors in launch-angle improvement over 2017 and in lowest ground ball rate. Who are their coaches you may ask -- Hitting coach Darren Bush (ex-River Cats manager) Assistant Hitting Coach Mike Aldrete 3B Coach Matt Williams and of course Bob Melvin. How about SF takes the $400 million they want to give Harper and invest in a coaching staff that can turn things around. Bring them all over but keep Curt Young...

  5. Posey likely to have season ending surgery on his hip. And why not? You'd have to be an incorrigible optimist to think this team, with all these holes, is going to contend ever for the #2 WC. Better to get him some extra rest and not hurt his hip anymore than it is and be able to get a jump on rehab.
