Down on the Farm: 6/2/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 5-2:

Adam Duvall(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(16).  BA= .292.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.82.

Strong start for Escobar.  Lets hope he can string a few of these together.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

High A  San Jose Giants topped the Inland Empire 66'ers 6-4:

Joe Biagini(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.30.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(16).  ERA= 1.21.

Biagini has quietly been one of the more consistent starters in the organization this year.

Low A  Rome Braves edged the Augusta Greenjackets 6-5:

Tyler Horan(RF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .281.
Brandon Bednar(1B)- 2 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .268.
Jake Messner(LHP)- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.18.

Horan and Bednar have been quieter lately after hot starts to the season.  Messner has been useful in a long relief role.

DSL  Giants beat Yankees1 6-1:

Juan Rodriguez(LF, 19 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .333.
Anthony Gomez(1B, 19 yo)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .500.
Kelvin Beltre(SS, 17 yo)- 1 for 5, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .167.
Eduin Villa(RHP, 18 yo)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

  1. I was at the Fresno game and Escobar looked great. I filed a report over at the Mmerc if you want to check that out, but never mind the previous results, the tools are there. He was hitting 94-95 from the stretch when he was in a jam in the 5th. The slider is definitely swing and miss. If he had a change up, he'd be lethal. As it is, he has big league tools and if I'm a rival GM, I'm trying to pry this guy from the Giants.

    1. LOL. Ironically, it was our GM that already made good on prying him from another organization!

I've got a feeling Escobar is here to stay. Thanks for the writeup Ryan.

    2. Good to hear Ryan. In one of the starts I watched online earlier in the year, he went through a stretch of 3 or so innings where he was nearly unhittable. Just filthy stuff. After that game, I knew he had the ability to be a big league starter. He just needs more refinement. I think people forget how young he is, and just how far he's advanced in the past couple years. He'll be ok, and I'll bet the Giants still have big plans for him down the line.

  2. Ryan, thanks for the update on Escobar.
I know Duvall, was Dh'ing last nite.
Having said that, he is on the 40 man roster, in your opinion... Can he hit major league pitching?

    1. Hello Richard,

Duvall does not have a complicated swing - but man does he get bat speed going. He is strong, like ox. I'd say he uses his lower half very well, but may be vulnerable away - he was had on breaking pitches away last night. I think he can handle big league fastballs. I know he's put Snydergaard in the seats. Maybe he hits .220-.250 in the big leagues with 20+ HR power, but OBP below .300.
