Down on the Farm: 6/13/2014

AAA  Omaha Storm Chasers edged the Fresno Grizzlies 7-6 in 11 innings:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 6.  BA= .264.
Joe Panik(2B)- 3 for 6, 2B.  BA= .326.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .296.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 5 IP, 12 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.26.

Games like this certainly won't quiet the clamor for Panik to replace Brandon Hicks.  I think it is becoming increasingly clear that if the Giants want to make a serious run at their 3'rd championship in 5 years, they can't ride out the season without upgrading 2B.  They could bring up Panik now and see how he does between now and the trade deadline, but the Giants apparently believe he is not quite ready.  Most likely solution is a trade for either Daniel Murphy or Ben Zobrist.  Giants and their fans need to be ready to give up a lot for one of those two.  Duvall is hopelessly blocked for this year, barring an injury to Pablo.

AA  New Hampshire Fisher Cats defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-3:

Angel Villalona(1B)- 3 for 4, 3B.  BA= .265.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .237.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.89.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.40.

3 hits for Angel V?  A triple?  Man, I would have liked to see the triple!  Strickland getting a rough introduction to AA.  Anybody object to trading Crick for Daniel Murphy straight up?

High A  Stockton Ports downed the San Jose Giants 3-1:

NTSH.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-1:

Tyler Horan(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(7), BB.  BA= .263.
Christian Jones(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.08.
Ray Black(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.70.
Luis Castillo(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.29.

Not sure what point of keeping Black in Low A any longer is.

Short Season  Vancouver Canadians pounded the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 11-2:

Tyler Hollick(LF)- 2 for 3, 3B.   BA= .667.
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 1 for 3.  BA= .333.
Ian Gardeck(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R,  0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

No draftees on any roster as yet.  Not sure where they are going to put them all after they sign.  Seems like some current players are gonna have to go.

DSL  Rojos(Reds) outhit the Giants 11-6:

Mikey Edie(CF, 16 yo)- 0 for 2.  BA= .245.
Kelvin Beltre(3B, 17 yo)- 3 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .263.
Robinson Medrano(RF, 18 yo)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .314.

Edie came out of the game early.  Injury?  Terrific game for Beltre.

  1. Crick's most recent scouting report from Jason Parks at Baseball Pro wasn't exactly what I'd call 'glowing.' I think his value is low right now, and I would really like to see how he responds in the 2nd half. However, I do think the Giants covered themselves well by drafting Beede and Garcia, two guys who comp very well to Crick and Susac. I would part ways with just about anyone in the system at this point, but Crick is the one guy I'd have to think hard about.

    1. It's Susac for me. The Giants are going to get a lot of calls on Mella, and I bet they have to turn people away because they don't know enough about him yet.

    2. I still believe that Crick just needs more time to develop and repeating that motion.
His value definitely is too low to give up on now.

    3. Susac would be a tough one for me as well, although he really isn't making anyone feel better about his injury issues this season. That's becoming too much of a trend, in my opinion. I wouldn't part ways with Mella, and I don't think I'd let go of Ysla either. I think both of those guys have a chance to do something... but we've said the same of many others in Augusta who didn't pan out.

I guess I'll put it this way: If the right trade pops up, I won't be devastated by losing any of the current kids in the system.

  2. Gregorio got transferred to Augusta per Joe Ritzo. That could open up a spot eventually for Christian Jones. Maybe Black hitches a ride.

  3. I was unfortunate enough to see Edwin Escobar get lit up last night, as well as Heath Hembree having nothing in his tank to blow the save.

Escobar was simply throwing too may belt high mistakes to some good, strong hitters. Justin Maxwell is like a poor man's Hunter Pence. Christian Colon looked good at the plate for Omaha. Drafted with G. Brown from Fullerton in same class.

Joe Panik is ready , Freddy. He's driving the ball much better - the ISO is picking up. He's solid on D. Nothing flashy. Makes the turn just fine - quick hands and release.

Duvall's a beast in beast mode. He's on the verge of launching just about every pitch, but shows measured restraint for a guy with 20 bombs and knocking on the big league door. But, for a guy who's supposed to play 3rd base, they don't give him reps there. I still think I'm right about the Giants selling him as a 1B/DH> And if they're going after Ben Zobrist, Duvall may be part of a deal that piques the Rays interest.

    1. Bingo. Duvall, Adrianza and Escobar for Zobrist. Whadduya say?

    2. Ugggh, Escobar too? No way.

Duvall, Adrianza if they want him, and one of the lower level pitching prospects with some promise. Ysla? Flores? Blach at best?
