Landen Roupp pitched a Quality Start but in a familiar story line, the bullpen couldn't hold a lead and the lineup struggled to score in the later innings. Key Lines:
Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 3, HR(11), BB, R, RBI. ERA= .244. Marlins Park is a tough place to hit and it showed in multiple warning track outs. Much as we have criticized Devers, he is the one guy on this team who can muscle one out of pretty much any park. His solo HR got the Giants tied the score in the 6'th inning. Bryce Eldridge will probably grow into that kind of hitter but he's not quite there yet.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(4). BA= .328. Lee has turned into quite the hit machine. He still trails Otto Lopez, who went 1 for 4, by .006 in the batting race.
Casey Schmitt LF- 2 for 4, RBI. BA= .286. Fourth 2-hit game in a row for Casey Schmitt.
Daniel Susac C- 1 for 3, SF, RBI. BA= .287. Susac just missed a grand slam HR when the Marlins LF caught his drive just above the short 7-foot wall in LF. Willy Adames scored the Giants first run on the Sac Fly.
Landen Roupp RHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, 7/3 GO/AO. ERA= 4.15. A rare Quality Start for Giants SP's.
Sam Hentges- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 2.84. Hentges got the 7'th inning with a 3-2 lead and couldn't hold it. The Giants lineup was not able to come back.
Trevor McDonald RHP tries to even the series tomorrow facing Max Meyer RHP who comes in with a 7-0 record and a 2.75 ERA. Meyer is a former first round draft pick, #3 overall, in 2020. If you want great homegrown pitching, you have to be willing to draft it in the first round. Reminder that Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum and Madison Bumgarner were all first round draft picks for the Giants.
No Cain, Lincecum, or Bumgarner on the Giants this year.
ReplyDeleteWhere were the current Giants SPs picked:
Webb 4th round
Roupp 12th round
McDonald 11th round
Ray 12th round
Houser 2nd round
Mahle 7th round
Whisenhunt 2nd round
Seymour 6th round
Eldridge and Crawford were 1st round picks as TWPs but neither will be an SP
Will Bednar was a 1st round pick and is hanging on in Sacramento but not as an SP
Kyle Harrison was thought to become a 1st round pick in 2021 but we know what happened there and now he's pitching like 1st rounder in Milwaukee.
Phil Bickford was a 1st rounder in 2015 and traded for some good years of Will Smith, who wasn't a 1st rounder.
Tyler Beede was a 1st round pick in 2014
Chris Stratton was a 1st round pick in 2012
Kyle Crick was a supplemental 1st round pick in 2011
Zack Wheeler was a 1st rounder in 2009 and eventually pitched like a 1st rounder should. He ended the succession of good 1st round picks for the Giants that led to the even year successes
Nothing to do with pitching but the one-time Giant near phenom Tyler Fitzgerald is a free agent after being released by the hated ones.
Good rundown on where Gianrs SPs were drafted. Joe Whitman was a 2nd rd pjck in 2023 currently in AAA. We will probably see Carson Whisenhuint back up to the majors shortly.. They don't have a lot of pitching prospects in the high minors. Although they should draft the best available player at #4 in the upcoming draft maybe they should consider drafting UCSB SP Jackson Flora especially if Chlowsky, Emerson, and Lackey are off the board.
DeleteFor all the criticism against Chapman, Adames, and Devers, they are all likely to end up with decent numbers even if it’s a down year by their standards and they are also a month-long hot streak away from having good numbers. They just badly need better pitching and a better bullpen, especially better high leverage guys. I think Gilbert could be decent one day but they should be seeing what they got in Cox and seeing if he can translate that elite speed and hot bat into being a terror on the base paths. If he can consistently get on base, he could be pretty close to an automatic to score with that speed. He steal second and then go home in a ground ball to the outfield.
