Robbie Ray turned in his second strong performance in a row and recorded a Quality Start and the lineup scored just enough runs to make it a wire-to-wire win. Key Lines:
Casey Schmitt LF/1B- 2 for 4. BA= .299. 7'th consecutive multi-hit game. Did not figure into the scoring although his single in the 7'th advanced Bryce Eldridge DH into scoring position helping Rafael Devers 1B get an RBI.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 3, HR(5), BB, SB(5), R, RBI. BA= .331. Lee's homer run in the second inning went over the CF fence near the 415 ft sign in Triples Alley. It drove in the Giants first run of the game.
Willy Adames SS- 2 for 4, 2B, R. BA= .227. Adames followed Lee's HR with a double and then scored on Matt Chapman 3B's single.
Robbie Ray LHP- 8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 6 K's, 8/4 GO/AO. ERA= 3.70. This is interesting. Remember the dust-up over a game which was lost after something like 9 consecutive sliders were called....by somebody? There was discussion over the coaches maybe not being happy with Patrick Bailey's pitch selection and possibly calling pitches from the dugout. It's unclear how much that contributed to the decision to trade Bailey. Well, now it comes out that Logan Webb RHP and some of the other pitchers have started calling their own pitches and doing it with success. Is Ray another case? Webb's comments seemed to take a shot at the new catchers, Susac and Haase, saying the level of trust in their pitch selection is not quite up to what it was with Bailey. Adrian Houser RHP chimed in that he wished he tried it before his demotion to the bullpen. I remember after the telecommunication devices for pitch calling were introduced there was talk of it allowing pitchers to call their own game. Max Scherzer, in particular was someone who wanted to try that. Then that talk died out. Pitch selection by the coaches from the dugout seems to be on the rise. I actually like the idea of pitchers calling their own game and hope it continues to bring better results for the Giants pitching.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(5). ERA= 2.97. Kilian is the Closer as he should be.
Rafael Devers did the right thing and apologized to Tony Vitello for the "misunderstanding" on Sunday. Seems they are both good now so we will close the book on that incident and move on. There are obviously bigger issues at all levels of the organization that need to addressed. Buster Posey held a press conference then refused to take non-baseball questions. That was not a great look on his part. He did say he has no plans to resign as POBO before the end of his contract and reiterated that all options are on the table at the trade deadline except Logan Webb. Wish Buster the best over the next month as it is a critical period for the future of the organization and we'll hope he is able to unload at least one of the "albatross" contracts.
Tyler Mahle RHP returns from the IL tonight to face Gage Jump LHP who comes in with a 2.37 ERA.
The _____ Athletics are very solid odds favorites to win in San Francisco this evening.
ReplyDeleteA's payroll: $96M
G's payroll for 4 players: $102M
Go Giants, take the odds, WIN BIG!
Ray has certainly increased his trade value at just the right time. I certainly hope the Giants can rework Jung Hoo’s contract so they are not as compelled to trade him. If there is a rebuild he and Eldridge might be among the few players who would draw in the fans- he’s so fun to watch on both offense and defense.
ReplyDeleteInteresting chatter about the Pirates being interested in trading their competitive balance draft pick. Could the Giants be in on that to acquire more draft capital? Since they can’t pick earlier than #10 in 2027 it might behoove them to go more in this year, especially with this being a pretty deep draft class.
I hadn't read that chatter - very interesting!
DeleteHopefully we can be less of a gong show as ownership doesn't want to be forced into taking more angry phone falls from Manfred
ReplyDeleteI am trying to read between the lines here, but why did Buster even do the press conference yesterday at all? When he couldn't say much either on the LGBTQ issue or had not spoken to Devers -- even when those were the obvious two issues that were going to come up?
ReplyDeleteI doubt Buster himself asked to go out there and address the media given his level of preparation. My guess is that he was the classic sacrificial lamb who needed to take the heat? Who would be making that call to send him out there and why?

Hey Giants fans, has anyone out there not given up?
ReplyDeleteIt's not impossible, but when will it be.
There are 18 games until the All Star Break, 12 are at home, the 6 road games are in Colorado and and Arizona, the toughest home games are 3 against Atlanta.
Say they go 14-4 ant they're 4 under .500 at the break: are they eliminated?
If they begin winning, don't give up until they drop 3 in the row.
