Game Wrap 6/17/2026: Giants 7 Braves 5

The Giants lineup hit 3 home runs to back a solid start by Carson Whisenhunt and the bullpen hung on.  While technically the games were played on separate days, it felt like the Giants swept a doubleheader.  Key Lines:

Luis Arraez 2B- 2 for 4, HR(3), BB, 2 R, 4 RBI.  BA= .326.  Arraez' line while batting at the top of the order over the the two games:  5 for 9, 2B, HR, BB, 4 R, 4 RBI.  Maybe he should bat leadoff permanently?

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 5, HR(6), R, RBI.  BA= .319.  Eldridge's line for the two games:  3 for 9, HR, BB.  He has an 8-game hit streak with 4 multi-hit games in that span.  He has 6 BB's and 4 K's in the 8 games.

Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB, RBI.  BA= .240.  Devers had a nice two games going 3 for 7, 2 2B, HR, 2 BB.  He is 6 for 14 over his last 4 games after going 1 for 19 in his previous 5.

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, HR(13), R, RBI.  BA= .229.  Adames hit a solo HR in each of the two games.  He usually hits better in the second half.  I can see him hitting his usual 30 HR by the end of the season.

Casey Schmitt LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .283.  Three 2-hit games in a row for Casey.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.60.  Whiz looks noticeably bigger and stronger this year.  He pitched 5 shut out innings before allowing 3 straight hits to open the 6'th.  These games were played under doubleheader rules and he was the 27'th man for the second game.  He was optioned back to AAA immediately after.

J. T. Brubaker RHP, Sam Hentges LHP and Ryan Walker RHP pitched a scoreless inning each.  Brubaker allowed an inherited runner to score on a sac fly.  Matt Gage LHP was called on to pitch the 9'th in a non-save situation but he turned it into one allowing 3 runs in 0.1 IP.  Tristan Beck and his 9.00 ERA were called on to get the last two outs and Save the game.  His ERA went down to 8.31.

Game 3 of the series is scheduled today but is threatened by a tropical storm. Landen Roupp RHP and Martin Perez LHP are the scheduled SP's.

    1. Not sure what happened. I can see it now. Maybe it disappeared while I did some editing?

  3. Jonah Cox's SB in the 9th was super nice - that's the kind of pressure you need to apply even when you have a comfortable lead. It's surprising to hear that Casey leads our team in SBs. Arraez is 1 behind Casey, at 6 bags. Drew G has ZERO :(

  4. Thursday's makeup game is to be played August 31 in Atlanta.
Sunday, Aug 30: SFG home game with ARI@1:05 pm PDT
Monday, Aug 31: SFG @ Atlanta after red eye flight from California
Tuesday, Sep 1: SFG @ PIT 6:40 pm EDT opening 3 game mid-week series
If the Giants are still in contention, that is unreasonable.
More likely, they won't be, so give a perhaps needed victory to the Braves and maybe to the Pirates, too.
MLB is run by geniuses (or is that genii?)
What's the "fine" if the Giants don't show up?

    1. Overall, it is worse than it sounds:
23 games in a row without a day off.
Does anyone have pitching for that?
Perhaps the Flying Squirrels could play the Braves on their day off between games @ home and in Akron
