Spring Training Update: No News Is Good News

Sorry there isn't much to discuss out of spring training so far and that's probably a very good thing.  Most hard news generated in early spring training is related to injuries.  If the most vigorous discussion is related to back up catcher, we can all breath a sigh of relief and count our blessings.

Based on the few on-field reports I've seen it seems the most impressive swings in live batting practice were from Willy Adames who homered on the second pitch he saw and Bryce Eldridge who had a nice looking hack at a left-handed delivery from Raymond Burgos.  There was also a swing by Jerar Encarnacion off Camilo Doval which may or may not have left the ballpark.

We're just 4 days away from the first spring exhibition game against the Rangers in Surprise, AZ.  I am all rested up from last season and ready to post daily Game Wraps so stay tuned.

  2. I spent a fair amount of time reading Fangraph's "Top 100 Prospects" list today. I know that these list from different sources vary so I try to look at several different publications. For the Fangraphs one they list Bryce Eldridge at #26 and Carson Whisenhunt at #95. It would be nice to see at least a couple more prospects on the list, but it hopefully more of SFG's minor leaguers will develop. (Besides since there are 30 teams in mlb, a fair showing would be three to. four prospects on the list). No new info on either of the two who made the list. Hope Whisenhunt can develop his other pitches to help his all-world changeup.

    1. I don't argue with only 2 Giants prospects in the top 100, especially since Kyle Harrison Graduated last season who otherwise would also be worthy of the list. I think there are a handful of prospects in the lower minors who could move up into next year's list including James Tibbs III, Rayner Arias and Jhonny Level. Of course, Eldridge and Whiz could graduate this year and move off the list. That's one reason why all of these lists should be taken more as approximations and with some context.

  3. Indeed. Glad to have you well rested Doc. Looking forward to the fabulous distraction that is MLB.

  5. How much would you give up in trade for one year of Vladimir Guerrero Jr?
    Or, would you pass?

    1. Pass, and I definitely would not sign him to a mega-contract. Vlad Jr just does not look like a player who will age well.

    2. Looking forward to seeing which Wilmer shows up: the productive 2023 version or the broken down 2024 cripple.
Does knee tendonitis cure @ 33 yo with six months of rest and proper treatment? He says "I'm 100 percent now and we'll see where things go. I had to make a small adjustment. I don't want to get into my right leg as much."
He did have to deal with this in the 2018-2019 off season, but he has had some good years with the Giants. When healthy.

    3. SI puts forth SF signing Guerrero Jr to a mega Soto-light signing and trading their Numero Uno prospect for a Big Haul in the off-season.
Perhaps SI should stick to bathing suits.

    4. After an offseason where we saw articles linking the Giants to Burnes, Goldschmidt, Kim, Alfonso, and Flaherty, I would not be surprised if those articles were AI or bot generated. Most of those articles seemed like click bait and I noticed other teams had similar articles when I used my VPN to change my location.

    5. I agree with the AI/Clickbait theory. If you read those articles with a critical eye, most of them don't say there is actual interest or negotiations going on, just that someone thinks so-and-so player might be a good fit with such- and-such team.

    6. In Burnes case, if you read the daily online stories you were led to believe the Giants were actively involved to the end and debating whether to add more money or another year. In reality, they made one low-ball offer at the winter meetings and never had further discussion.

    7. I feel that these kinds of "articles" could be somewhat harmful if they exerted any influence on team-agent negotiations. It seems Buster's front office was able to filter out the noise but I'm not sure if other teams were able to.
