Justin Verlander made his first Cactus League appearance of his long career as the Giants came from behind to battle the Rockies to a tie. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 2, HR(1), BB. BA= .400. Lee went deep to right with 2 outs on the first inning off Chase Dollinger RHP who is one of the Rockies' top prospects. That was the last of the Giants scoring until the ninth inning.
Diego Velasquez 2B- 1 for 1, 2B. Velasquez was up from minor league camp for split squad day. He made the most of the opportunity to impress Bob Melvin and the coaches, leading off with 9'th with double to CF to set up the tying score.
Bo Davidson LF- 1 for 1, 2B. Davidson was also up from the minor league camp and also made the most of his opportunity doubling in Rayner Arias(Hey! A Rayner Arias sighting) who PR for Velasquez. I do hope the reason Arias was used as a PR is not because his wrist is still bothering him.
Justin Verlander RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Verlander reportedly touched 96 MPH on the fastball. He gave up a HR to Michael Toglia DH on a hanging slider. I am pretty sure Verlander's primary goals were to get his work in and not get hurt.
Antonio Jimenez LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. Bob Melvin gave a shout out to Jimenez a couple days ago and he looked good in his first Cactus League appearance of the spring.
Carson Ragsdale RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. Between the 2 games, all three Carsons pitched today. Ragsdale's 2-inning stint was by far the most impressive.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. 2 ground-outs, 1 flyout.
Randy Rodriguez RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. Strong appearance but agains the Angels' scrubs in the 9'th inning.
So far, the pitchers seem to be ahead of the hitters which is normal for this time of spring training. Hitters don't have their timing down yet and they are seeing a different pitcher every PA. Good to see Jung Hoo Lee off to a strong start as small as the sample is.
