Spring Training Game Wrap 2/27/2025: Giants 6 Mariners 4

Landen Roupp became the first Giants pitcher to complete 3 innings and dominated in a spring training win.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 0 for 0, 3 BB.  BA= .000.  LMWJ has 4 walks and 4 K's in 9 PA's which means he's put one ball in play.  I guess that's what you call a 2 true outcomes batter.   The primary job of the leadoff hitter is to get on base.  He's doing that, although it did not lead to any runs scored in this game.

Sabin Ceballos 3B- 1 for 1.  BA= .750.  Ceballos is not even a non-roster invitee.  He's 3 for 4 on the spring.

Luis Matos RF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .286.  The wind was blowing straight in from CF at 11 MPH.  I read that Matos hit it 108 MPH off the bat and it would have been a HR in 16 MLB parks.  Matos is quietly having a good early spring.

Brett Wisely 2B- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .500.  Wisely has a leg up on a utility IF job due to batting lefthanded.  His performance so far is not detracting from that.

David Villar 3B/1B- 1 for 1.  BA= .333. Villar is out of options and appears to have no chance of making the Opening Day roster.  He's played sparingly so far.  This was his second hit in 7 PA's.  Is there a team out there who is impressed enough to jump the waiver line and offer a trade?  I think Villar could have and Adam Duvallesque ceiling.

Landen Roupp RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA- 0.00.  If Roupp is the placeholder for the #5 starter role, he's doing everything he can to grab that opportunity by the throat.  Wow!

Spencer Bivens RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Lou Trivino RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Trivino makes his first spring appearance.  His contingent MLB conract and past connection to Bob Melvin suggest a roster spot is his to lose.

Jake Lamb came out of the game after a base hit with a tight quad.

Logan Webb RHP makes his second spring against the Brewers tomorrow in Scottsdale.

  1. I still have huge concerns for LHRP, 1B, 2B (but waiting on Fitz) and OF with MATOS the only kid gaining any traction, but I'll leave them alone for now.

I'll stay with the positive.. Great to see ROUP continue his strong spring with good control, which is the key for him...No reason he can't be the 5th starter and he's n easy kid to root for after all he's been through and his three pitch stuff (ooh, that curve!)..

And what is the deal with HARRISON? Haven't seen him yet....Did i miss him??? Injured? Working on his technical/mechanical flaws from last year??

    1. Harrison got a late start in camp due to some sort of temporary medical illness. Last report I saw said he is fine and ramping up a throwing program. I would think we should see his name in a boxscore soon.

    2. It's not ideal that. Fitz and Ramos, two young players who need to build on last season are both missing the early games but it's still February. Plenty of time left before the season starts and spring performances historically don't mean much anyway. Enny Romero LHP!

  2. Earlier in the year, I was complaining about the downsizing of the scouting but it appears the Giants are ramping it back up according to an article in Foghorn. They added six new scouts and it seems that they are connected to new director Hadi Raad. One scout has the last name Sabean (Brian's son). Two of the scouts have experience with pitchers. Raad seems to be a bright guy so I will trust the hires. Since he worked for Pittsburgh last year, he might have had a hand in obtaining a certain backup catcher who needed a change of scenery.

    1. Good news they are ramping up scouting. It seemed like the Giants were going heavier with analytics under FZ. They need to be strong in both scouting and analytics to be successful.

  3. Maria Guardado had an interesting piece entitled "Meet the Carsons: Whisenhunt, Seymour and Ragsdale eager to make their own mark"
    It's posted on mlb.com/giants/news — don't think there's any pay-wall.
    It begins with:
"One is a left-hander from North Carolina with a world-class changeup. Another is a hard-throwing right-hander from Southern California whose diet consists almost entirely of meat. The third is a 6-foot-8 Floridian who is known for his knee-buckling curveball and general affability."
It's light, humorous, and informative. Worth a read.

  4. This is sad. Villar is going to end up being Bryan Reynolds, for another team. And they're probably going to get nothing for him. I hope, for his sake, that he ends up being a Pirate.

    1. Bryan Reynolds is quite a stretch here. Probably more along the lines of Adam Duvall. Still a little disappointing it probably won't be with the Giants but I can't honestly say I'd prefer Villar over Matt Chapman going forward, nor can I honestly say Villar has earned any kind of a roster spot. I do think it once again points up that the Giants farm system is better than it's given credit for.

    2. Villar is fun to watch. He gets SO red hot sometimes.

But, yeah, odds are against him having any kind of a significant MLB career, let alone be at star quality like Reynolds.

  5. The reason I say Reynolds and not Duvall is that Villar is more of a pure hitter with a little pop in his bat. Not really a good as Will Clark, but more on that track. Same as Reynolds. Duvall, imo, is a pure slugger. Ala Rob Deer. He'll hire a lot of homeruns, but will also strike out 150+ times in a season.

    1. Whoa! Not sure what player you are looking at who you think is Villar but it's not the same one I am seeing.

  6. Whoa... Villar hasn't gone anywhere or done anything yet. But if he does, we wish him well- the life of a baseball journeyman is brutal. I don't think him finding some success elsewhere will be as painful as what became of Reynolds, Wheeler, Castillo, or even Duvall. But hey, just think about the White Sox. If they hadn't traded away Tatis Jr for James Shields there is no way they set the loss record and go down in history for futility. OUCH!

    1. It's easy to pick on the trades that didn't work out. No GM/POBO is going to win every trade. In the Sabes/Evans era way more worked out than not.

    2. David Villar has a PCL MVP award on his mantel but that kind of award usually goes to good minor leaguers who rack up good numbers in AAA but not good enough to get promoted to the majors. In recent years, Ty France, Christian Walker, and Joc Pedersen have won it. He still has some value and he can still earn a spot if the Giants have injuries. He's a little old for a prospect so what you see now is probably what you get... decent power, low average, blocked at 3B by Chapman.

  7. I don't see Reynolds as a comparison to Villar. I see Jake Lamb after 2017 or JD Davis as more likely comparison. His time to get traction on his career was 2023 and the options alarm clock is sounding.
