Spring Training Game Wrap 2/24/2025: Angels 7 Giants 4

Seems like the Giants play the Angels in Tempe early every spring and get knocked around every year.  Today was no different as Mason Black had a rough start to his spring.  Key Lines:

Marco Luciano LF- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .286.  The HR in the 4'th inning was a blast high off the batters eye in straightaway CF.  It looked like Luciano had a great look at the ball and got all of it.

Dakota Jordan CF- 1 for 1, 2B.  Jordan was another kid up from minor league camp who got a chance to impress.  He doubled in the ninth with a runner on first to set up a 3-run rally.

Carter Howell RF- 1 for 1.  Also up from minor league camp, Howell drove in a run with a bases-loaded single.  Two more runs scored on a HBP to Jakob Christian 1B and a groundout by Adrian Sugastey C.

Mason Black RHP- 1.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  Rough start to the spring for Mason Black who was probably not at the top of the depth chart for for #5 SP coming in.  The big 3-run blast that cost him the most was off the bat of none other than Jorge Soler DH.  BTW, I am still scratching my head over Soler's time with the Giants.  What was that all about?

Trent Harris RHP- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  Harris is a sleeper RP prospect.  He came into the first inning with one out and runners on 2'nd and 3'rd and got out of it.  Per spring rules, Black then went back out to start the second inning in which he gave up another run but got through the inning.

Carson Seymour RHP- 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 3/1.  3 of the 4 hits Seymour gave up were ground balls.  That's going to happen at times to guys who pitch to groundball contact.

Trevor McDonald RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 4/0.  On the other hand if you keep the ball on the ground with a strong defense behind you, you will win more than you lose.

Notes:

As mentioned in a couple of comments after yesterday's Wrap and not to anyone's great surprise, Tom Murphy C was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his spine. He'll get an epidural injection and will likely start the season on the IL.

Former Giants prospect, Alexander Canario OF, was traded from the Cubs to the Mets for cash after he was DFA'd over the weekend.

Robbie Ray LHP makes his first spring start tomorrow against the A's in Mesa, AZ.

  1. In the split squad game against the Rockies, Verlander topped out at 95.7 mph while giving up 1 run on a Michael Toglia HR. That velocity out of the gate is encouraging.

  2. Without a sweep in Cincinnati, 2-0 may be the high point of the year.
It could be a brutal 1st month with NYY & Philly part of a tough 9-game road trip East in April.

  3. After signing Justin Turner for 1 year, $6M, Cubs needed the roster spot.
He seemed to be one of the good picks pre FZ, although Bryant almost pulled SF through in 2021.

    1. Canario stuck out at 30% rate at AAA and 40% rate at Chicago. Way too high.

    2. Very SSS for Carnario, Fitzgerald K'ed at 31.5%.
Canario's slash line (.286/.333/.524/.857), again in very SSS, is better than Fitzgerald's across the board.
Canario played at 23/24 yo, Fitz @ 25/26.
Far too early to write Canario off – had the Giants an open spot, Buster would have been interested.
That was a steal by the Mets. It's not as if the Giants are loaded with young OFers.

    3. Let's see, Heliot Ramos, Luis Matos, Grant McCray, Marco Luciano? Wade Meckler can't seem to buy himself a cup of coffee. Agree, Canario could be a savvy pickup by the Mets.

    4. ...but for the purposes of grading the Bryant trade, I think we can close the book on it and say it was a worthwhile trade to make and the Giants didn't really lose anything of significant value as Killian looks like his career is stalled out and Canario is DFA'd and traded for cash.

    5. My error being unclear, the statement was meant to mean "It's not as if the Giants are loaded with SURE THING young OFers."
There are never enough, are there?
Don't you suspect that the Cubs like everyone else with a full 40-man roster wanted to sneak Canario through?
Canario will be playing every day for the Mets, a year older and wiser, but still the youngest Met OFer @ 24 yo at the beginning of 2025. His SSS is encouraging, well, except for the strikeouts where he is in McCray-land.

    6. The MBLTR chat host today opined that the the Mets will also DFA Canario and try to get him through waivers. Gives him zero chance of making the team.

    7. Fansided thinks Canario will serve as a depth piece because Marte is having knee troubles which may keep him from being ready by opening day. On the Mets' outfield pecking order, there are four reserves ahead of Canario but he makes sense if Marte starts the season on the IL.

  4. I mostly disagree with the notion that you can never have enough outfielders. If we have too many OFs, there will not be enough opportunities for the up and coming players. OF positions have been blocked during the FZ era as aging OFs such as AJ Pollack and Mark Canha took spots that may have given the younger guys to get experience. A short leash on a promising player who has put in his time is not a good path to success.
Pitchers on the other hand I would agree with the adage "That you can never have enough pitching." Pitchers get hurt more than fielders due to the stress put on their elbows and shoulders.
