Hot Stove Update: Farhan Signs OF
About 1 week ago, Farhan Zaidi, in an apparent attempt to calm the fanbase, said he expected to acquire 1 to 2 more OF's by spring training. I'm not sure if Brandon Guyer is who he had in mind, but I'm pretty darn sure Guyer is not who the collective fanbase had in mind! Once upon a time, Brandon Guyer was a decent short half of a R-L OF platoon. Over the course of his career he's actually hit LH pitchers pretty well....while hitting RHP's not at all. His other major claim to fame is an uncanny ability to get HBP's, kind of a latter day Ron Hunt, if you will. The problem with all this is the last time Brandon Guyer posted a fWAR above 0.1 was in 2016. He saw 49 PA in AAA last year with zero in MLB.
Now granted, there are still 9 days to go before pitchers and catchers report to spring training and 2 weeks until the first full squad workout, but as it stands, Zaidi's OF acquisition is a backup to the short side of an OF platoon. In other words, a backup to Joey Rickard if that gets your juices flowing. I've lost count of how many times Farhan Zaidi has failed to meet expectations he created himself, but you can chalk up another one here. Of course the caveat is he still has some time, but from here it's not looking good.

Agreed, I would day Zaidi has failed in the PR Dept in a lot of ways. It doesn't seem to be his thing. He would have been better off not getting the fan base's hopes up in this case. But Baggs tweeted that it was erronously reported that Guyer received a minor league contract with an invite to Major league camp, he's reporting to minor league camp instead. I'm learning though that this front office will continue to tweak the roster before, during spring training and during the season. If what Baggs says is true about Guyer, maybe another outfield transaction is coming. I don't expect it to be anything big though.
