DrB's 2020 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #40 Frankie Tostado

Frankie Tostado 1B/OF.  DOB:  3/31/1998.  B-L, T-L.  6'2", 205 lbs.

Low A:  .259/.313/.427, 17 2B, 6 3B, 18 HR, 6.7 BB%, 20.9 K%, GB/FB= 1.21, 541 PA.

Frankie Tostado has pretty much flown under the radar except for his grade 70+ name.  He was a 2-sport star at Camarillo HS(CA) then went to Oxnard Community College.  JC stats tend to be very difficult to find, but it seems he missed most of his JC season due to TJ surgery.  He was drafted in 2017 but did not make his pro debut until the summer of 2018 hitting .281 in the AZL.  Despite all the missed time, Frankie was just 21 for his first full season in Augusta.  He had a breakout season there hitting 18 HR's, which has to be some sort of record for a Giants prospect playing for the Greenjackets.  There is a video interview where he says he worked on using the whole field to keep the shifts honest and showed that he has enough natural power to make that work.

There is a lot to like in the stat line including the relatively low K rate and power.  The BB% could be a bit higher and the GB rate could be a bit lower, but there is still plenty of time for him to work on those.  He's ready for San Jose, but may have to compete with Logan Wyatt for playing time at 1B.  He also can play LF which gives him more opportunity for PA's.  He's still far enough under radars that I think I can call him a major sleeper in the organization.
