DrB's 2020 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #39 Kai-Wei Teng

Kai-Wei Teng RHP.  DOB:  12/1/1998.  6'4" 260 lbs.

Low A(Twins):  4-0, 1.60, 50.2 IP, 8.70 K/9, 2.49 BB/9, GB/FB= 1.41.
Low A(Giants):  3-0, 1.55, 29 IP, 12.10 K/9, 2.17 BB/9, GB/FB- 1.40.

He came over from the Twins in the Sam Dyson trade.  For a guy listed at 260 lbs, Kai-Wei Teng carries his weight very well.  For some perspective, Bartolo Colon is listed at 5'11", 285 lbs.  Looking at Teng pitch in videos, I would guess his weight to be more around 230-240 lbs, but if you look closely, he carries a tremendous amount of mass in the hips/butt/upper legs and also shoulders/chest.

Teng throws a low-mid 90's FB with an easy looking, upright motion and a 3/4 release point.  He backs the FB up with a sharply down breaking curveball and a fading changeup.  There's not any projection in the body, in fact, there might be some negative projection, but the present stuff is good enough with some refinement.  Should start out the 2020 season in San Jose's rotation.  He's only 21 yo and the Giants have 3 more seasons before they have to add him to the 40 man roster, but I could see him being a fast mover in a system that is extremely thin for potential MLB pitching.

  1. He played here in Cedar Rapids. Though I wish they'd gotten Josh Winder, instead, Teng has put up impressive numbers. I'm excited to have him in the organization.
