Scouting the 2020 Draft: Austin Hendrick

Austin Hendrick OF, HS.  B-L, T-L.  6'1", 195 lbs.

Let's talk about the tools first.  Elite bat speed with both current and future power.  Runs the 60 in 6.80 secs.  Not elite fast, but fast enough to be a borderline CF prospect.  Lower half looks a bit thick to me on videos. Throws 89 off the mound and 93 from the OF.  With the arm and borderline speed, he projects as a RF.  Swing has been compared to Cody Bellinger, but probably needs some re-tooling.  Currently holds the bat high with a slight hitch at the start of the swing.  Fairly long stride with some length to the swing.  Extremely high ceiling with some bust potential due to swing mechanics.  My comp is more Jay Bruce.

  1. As for the Giants pick next year, their 17-3 streak in June-July 2019 netted them 9 wins (+/-) over their .422 winning record exclusive of the streak.
The surge dropped them to the 13th pick next year from as high as 6th which is where Doc is now in the 2020 draft scouting.
The breakout in June-July closely followed the acquisition of Alex Dickerson who slashed .386/.449/.773/1.222 as the Giants went 20-10 in the games he played to begin his Giant career in June (ending by injury July 30th coincident with SF's fall back to Earth).
Dickerson picked up and inspired the entire team which suddenly could do nothing wrong during the surge.
That changed 2019 & consequently the future with the decision NOT to trade Bumgarner, Smith, and maybe Dickerson himself at the deadline, unarguably costing the Giants some interesting pickups that could alter the future and a considerably better draft position for 2020.
Farhan's best pre All-Star acquisition, more impactful in the short run than YtY, Pillar, Vogt, Solano, & Gott boomeranged!
    Oh, what might have been!

  2. Will Smith on the air with Braves GM:

Smith was asked about Bumgarner, a fellow southerner who hails from rural North Carolina. He acknowledged that the lure of pitching in Atlanta could be compelling to Bumgarner, who has been linked in rumors to the Braves and who like Smith certainly would make baseball sense for Atlanta.

“I don’t know, maybe,” Smith said. “Maybe. We’ll see. That would be great. Especially with the kind of talent he is. We’ll see what they’ve got. … I just think any time you can get closer to home, a three-hour time change is a lot, stuff like that.”
