Hot Stove Update: Keep on Choog....Churnin'!

The Giants added three players to The Churn today:  IF Kean Wong, RHP Rico Garcia and RHP Trevor Oaks.  To make room on the 40 man roster, OF Mike Gerber and RHP Ricardo Pinto were designated for assignment.  Hey, I've been a longtime fan of the Wong boys myself,  and I definitely don't see any reason to keep Ricardo Pinto around, but the Gerber part kind of bothers me.  Yes, I know he had his chances last year at the MLB level, but so did Kean Wong.  To me, Gerber's track record in the minors shows more upside than Wong's.  This feels like more churning for the sake of churning.  Thank you.  Next!

BTW, I absolutely do not promise to keep up with every roster churning move Farhan cranks out this season, and yes, he'll probably come up with at least 1 surprising success story I will fail to comment on.

I've read rumors of high level meetings involving Farhan and ownership discussing pros and cons of potential managers.  More specifically the pros and cons of hiring Gabe Kapler.  Gotta wonder if Farhan is getting some pushback from high levels for his first choice for Manager.

  1. I'm a big fan of the Wong boys and their dad Kaha, hope that Kean survives the roster churning and shows the Giants what he can do. Kaha played minor league ball and now runs a baseball camp for kids 5 days a week on the big island, some of the players he's tutored have been drafted previously. John Shea reported today that the 3 finalist for manager are Kapler, Espada, and Quaterp. The holdup has been Zaidi trying to find out more about the candidates he doesn't know Quatero and Espada, nothing to do with Kapler who he already knows. I see nothing wrong with Zaidi exercising due diligence here.

  2. Jonathan Villar is apparently on the trading block because the O’s can’t afford to pay him around 10 million a year. He can play all over the diamond and hit anywhere in our lineup. Might be worth looking into

  3. Most of us are quite willing to spend OPM far beyond spending of our own money, but spending up to the luxury tax limit is probably not a goal of the owners.
After committing a huge personal sum (debt) in conjunction with the city providing some slum land, the Owners built a remarkable venue for Barry Bonds et al to shine, and attendance jumped 60% in the first year out of home-that-never-should-have-been and maintained full-house levels for 16 years with a dip post-Barry before the record run beginning in 2010.
However, failure caught up with reality, and 2019 plunged 20% from the 2011 high to the lowest level ever by a goodly amount in this venue.
Would, say committing a 2020 max amount by loading up on high priced talent -- Rendon, Cole, Bumgarner, and (probably by the QO) Will Smith, restore the missing 8,000+ fans per game beyond the let's see the new team?
When the inherent depth flaws come into play will the seats remain full?
