The deepest demographic in this draft class is HS pitching. While pitching is the Giants biggest organizational need, they can take a position player at #2 overall and start drafting pitching in round 2 and get someone with ace potential. Here are 4 who could be there at #44-47, wherever the Giants end up with their second pick:
Ethan Reed, RHP, HS. 6'4", 195 lbs. 93 MPH FB with plus command and a pretty good changeup and curveball to go with it. Lots of room to fill out.
Dominic Pipkin, RHP, HS. 6'4", 170 lbs. Local kid from Pinole. Has hit 95-96 MPH in showcases. Scouts think he can fill out his frame.
Cole Winn, RHP, HS. 6'2", 195 lbs. 94 MPH. Advanced mix of pitches.
Slade Cecconi, RHP, HS. 6'4", 195 lbs. 96-97 MPH. Already with great velocity with tons of projection in his frame.

I love Pipkin there's lots of physical projection to be had for him though as you said. It'd be bittersweet for me as he's a Cal Berkeley commit.

Plus, sometimes first round prospects will fall to the second round for whatever reason, and with the large bonus they have available to give, with the 5% addition without penalty, they could give a bit more for the 2nd and 34d rounds, plus sign some cheap seniors in the second half of the first ten rounds, and get more bonus to allocate to the earlier guys.
ReplyDeleteReed sounds like someone the Giants would like: plus command, good changeup and curveball already, and with room to fill out, the 93 MPH could get higher.
Not sure if you profiled him or not, but read an article that Casey Mize Auburn RHP is a player to watch for the Tigers #1 pick. He threw a no hitter last night.
