Spring Training Game Wrap 3/17/2018: Reds 5 Giants 4; A's 8 Giants 3

The Giants could not overcome a 4-run 4'th inning by the Reds in Scottsdale.  Key Lines:

Austin Jackson CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .360.  The tea leaves and the BA are saying Jackson is the starting CF.

Buster Posey C- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .467.  It would be nice to get a few more dingers out of Buster this year.

Austin Slater DH- 2 for 4, HR(2).  A= .250.  Slater will almost certainly start the season in Sacramento.

Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 2 for 3.  BA= .294.  Kelby is coming on strong after a rough start to the preseason.  d'Arnaud and Rutledge have had strong springs, but the reserve MI role should be Kelby's to lose and he has done nothing to warrant losing it.

Gorkys Hernandez LF- 2 for 2, 2 2B.  BA= .235.  It may come down to Gorkys vs Jarrett Parker for the 5'th OF roster spot.

Chris Stratton RHP- 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.86.  Stratton pitched 4 dominant innings before running into trouble when he tried to stretch it out into a 5'th inning.  He left the game with 1 out, runners on first and second and 2 runs in.   Jose Valdez allowed the 2 inherited runners to score.  1.  Hopefully Stratton his conditioned to not not tire in the 5'th by the time the regular season starts.  2.  Hopefully the relief work will be better quality in the regular season.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.62.  Will this be Suarez' last spring appearance in major league camp?  If so, he's leaving with a good impression.

*********************************************************************************

Ty Blach pitched in some bad luck in a loss to the A's.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 0 for 1, 2 BB, SF.  BA= .382.  Belt can help a lineup when he does not get a hit.  Here he scores a run and drives one in with the SF.

Hunter Pence LF- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .290.  Pence is right back where you would expect him to be after a rough start to the spring.

Steven Duggar CF- 1 for 4.  BA= .270.  The tea leaves are saying Duggar starts the season in Sacramento.

Ty Blach LHP- 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/1.  ERA= 3.63.  The peripheral numbers suggest Blach was unlucky beyond the error by Crawford to open the game.

Julian Fernandez RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 18.56.  The numbers game is daunting, but the Giants need to find a way to keep Fernandez in the organization.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 11.12.  Very encouraging appearance by Dyson who was electric.

Tyler Beede RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 10.80.  Was this Beede's last spring appearance in major league camp?  His stuff looked better today than in his last start.

Fantasy Focus:  Around the League

Addison Russell SS, Cubs- 3 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .363.  I thought Russell would break out last year.  He killed my fantasy team.  I remember several years ago, Robinson Cano killed me after I drafted him in the second round.  He broke out the next year when I didn't want to have anything to do with him.

Jose Quintana SP, Cubs- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 1.93.  Cubs starting pitching looks terrific.  The bullpen not so much.

Marco Gonzalez SP, Mariners- 5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.10.  Breakout season for the Pride of Gonzaga?

Yusmeiro Petit RP, A's- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.13.  Petit seems ready to be a fantasy stud again out of a long relief role.  A's might want to think about making him a SP.

Zach Davies SP, Brewers- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 4/1.  ERA= 4.26.  I've had Davies on my fantasy team for the past 3 seasons.  He just keeps grinding out sub-4.00 ERA's in a very tough environment for pitchers.  Last year he put up 17 W's and 15 QS.

Trevor Bauer SP, Indians- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 5.40.  Is this the year Bauer puts it all together?

Luke Weaver SP, Cardinals- 4.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.68.  Breakout alert!

Sean Newcomb SP, Braves- 4.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.35.  Another breakout alert.

Charlie Morton SP, Astros- 4.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.93.  Morton should be a solid late-mid round target.

Delino DeShields OF, Rangers- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .349.  If you are thinking about drafting Billy Hamilton, target Delino DeShields instead.

Jakob Junis SP, Royals- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.80.  Sleeper alert.  Nice late-round target.

Jharel Cotton SP, A's- will undergo TJ surgery.  Not a big surprise there.  Something wasn't right clear back to last season.

  1. I went to both games yesterday(and the warriors game). I felt like blach didn't just have bad luck, he got destroyed. a couple of the doubles were hit off the wall in center that was 430 ft, the HR was crushed, and there were two loud line drive outs hit right at giants.

Posey's hr was fun to watch, it was to RF.

Panda made an awesome play at first. he dove to his right to barley snag a hard hit grounder. stratton didn't get over to first in time so pablo got up and dove to first to tag first just before the runner got there. he was playing hard.

    1. Good peripheral stats don't necessarily = good pitching, but they often do point to bad luck as a factor in a high ERA. ERA and peripheral stats tend to agree more over larger sample sizes.

  2. Austin Jackson might be a key player for this team. He can play all 3 outfield positions and hopefully he'll hit enough. Interested to see how this team hits against left-handed pitching like the Dodgers will throw at them. Blach and Stratton may have ups and downs but they should do ok. More concerned about pitching depth. Can Beede and Suarez help them if called upon in case of injury? As for fantasy, I just got offered a trade to include a Yankee multi inning reliever Chad Green for one of my top starting pitchers, and turned it down. I think the other team was trying to get the better of the trade, then again I could be wrong.

    1. I would prefer Chad Green to a back end starter, but not a frontline SP.

  3. TV crew said many of the long drives against Blach were wind aided significantly

  4. I'm wondering how many of these long relief studs

like Petit and set-up relivers should you carry on your fantasy pitching staff. Also Jim Calls had the Giants taking Brady Singer with their #2 pick. Would you be happy with that?

    1. 1. I don't think long relief studs are essential to any fantasy team but they tend to be more valuable than a bad starter or bad closer. It would be reasonable to roster 1 or 2 at a time if you can get a good one like Petit or Green or Archie Bradley.

    2. I would be disappointed in Singer for the Giants at #2. I think they can do better than that. If they are dead set on drafting a college pitcher, I would favor McClanahan, Gilbert or Mize over Singer if the draft was tomorrow. De Sedas is my clear #1 at this time.
