Scouting the Draft: 2017 Round 1.5 Grades

31.  Drew Rasmussen, RHP, Rays, College.  Did not sign.  Grade F.

32.  Jeter Downs, SS, Reds, HS.  R(Pioneer);  .267/.370/.424, 6 HR, 8 SB, 172 AB.  Nice combo of power, speed and plate discipline.  Pioneer is an extreme hitter-friendly environment.  Grade B.

33.  Kevin Merrill, SS, A's, College.  SS:  .320/.362/.424, 2 HR, 10 SB, 125 AB.  Merrill's stock got a late boost from a BA article.  Early returns look good.  Grade A-.

34.  Tristen Lutz, OF, Brewers, HS.  R(AZL):  .279/.347/.559, 3 HR, 68 AB.  R(Pioneer):  .333/.437/.559, 6 HR, 93 AB.  Big kid who can play CF.  Love the power.  Grade A.

35.  Brent Rooker, OF/1B, Twins, College.  R:  .282/.364/.588, 7 HR, 85 AB.  A+:  .280/.364/.552, 11 HR, 143 AB.  My top bat in the draft.  I would not have been upset if the Giants drafted him.  Candidate to be the first 2017 draftee to reach the majors.  Grade A.

36.  Brian Miller, OF, Marlins, College.  A:  .322/.384/.416, 17 2B, 21 SB, 233 AB.  Several mock drafts had Miller going to the Giants.  I wasn't too excited about that, but looks like a worthy pick from here.  Interesting the Marlins sent him directly to A ball.  Grade A.

  1. I am kicking myself for reading an article on yahoo about a rumor that the Giants are interested in trading Shark and Mark for Jason Heyward. The vomit taste still hasn't gone away and the more I think about this the more I feel sick. I have to tell myself that this is just a rumor and an unsubstantiated one at that (hopefully) but then I remember all those articles I read about a reality TV jackass becoming president of the United States and look how that turned out...

    1. Same feeling. He's never shown any real power and while he's got a good glove, good-glove/no-hit OFers are not so hard to find.

    2. A trade dreamed up in Chicago!
Maybe if the Cubs "throw in" Almoro and Bryant...

    3. I've been a long time fan of Jason Heyward, but at this point I don't think there is any realistic hope of his bat turning around. So yeah, no thanks.

    4. The giants are similarly baffled. There’s no truth to that singular tweet. Samardzija and Melancon both have more trade value.

    5. Cubs have some starter pitching questions for 2018.
Lester, Quintana, and Hendricks will get $41.25M and are a reasonable 1-3. Maybe someone is wishful for Moore and Shark rather than Montgomery and Butler (pre-arb) for 4 & 5.
That wouldn't be a bad rotation but they couldn't even get Cueto for Hendricks who has a more terrible contract and can't hit.
Lester @ 34 yo next year is probably in decline but will be around for 3 years and a buyout.
Quintana is coming up on 30, is salary friendly, but is he an ACE?
Arrieta will probably get mid 20's money for as long as he can squeak out from a needy buyer -- could be the Cubs, they need someone. He's still their best or close to it.
I would guess that Shark and Moore would look good to them although in Wrigley, is Shark an ace? Not bad historically, but a tough place to pitch if you leave the ball up.
Anyway, that trade isn't going to happen although I'd trade Cueto for Almoro even up and would take Heyward if he came with a BIG scholarship -- ~$60M.

  2. Great stuff, Doc. Thanks as always. For some reason, I'm beginning to worry that a consensus number 1 will present itself and the Giants will miss out on a can't miss, thanks in part to Sandoval's walk-off home run.

    1. I'm not seeing that scenario. The top tier goes 6 deep and I don't see any of them having the tools to pull away from the pack.

    1. Motorcycles. Both my brother and I were injured walk-aways from accidents that could have been fatal. People just don't see you until it's too late...
