BaseballCensus is a homey website I have linked to the left. They do profiles and scouting reports on minor league players. They seem to cover mainly the California League and now they are down in the AFL. One thing I like about them is they do their own thing and don't seem to be influenced much by the groupthink that often permeates prospect-oriented websites.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed they had named Braden Bishop their 2017 Minor League Player of the Year. Mind you, Braden was not their Cal League Player of the Year, but their Minor League Player of the year. Whotheheck is Braden Bishop you ask? Well, I asked the same thing.
Braden Bishop was drafted in the 3'rd round in 2015 by the Seattle Mariners out of the Univ. of Washington. He's a defense first CF with excellent speed. He's hit pretty well as a pro, but with scant power. He did put up impressive numbers in 2017:
2017 A+: .296/.385/.400, 25 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 16 SB, 10.9 BB%, 15.5 K%, 412 PA.
2017 AA: .336/.417/.448, 9 2B, 3B, HR, 6 SB, 10.3 BB%, 10.3 K%, 145 PA.
He's most likely a future 4'th OF type but an excellent defensive CF with some speed who can hit .300 and draw walks at a 10% rate has a shot at becoming a starting CF in MLB. That's the player. Here's what made me want to write this up. Braden Bishop has started his own charity called 4MOM to raise money for Alzheimer's Disease Research. His mother, Suzy, who ran track for UCLA and who he probably got his speed from, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease at age 54. 4MOM has already worked with the minor league teams he has played for to hold charity nights and auctions to raise money. His 4MOM has now partnered with a company called Rivet Revolution to sell custom 4MOM bracelets to raise money.
If you have not done so already, check out BaseballCensus linked to the left and check out Braden Bishop, CF prospect for the Seattle Mariners. They have done some profiles of Giants prospect, most recently of Jalen Miller.

That's an interesting site.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of group think, Kershaw had a very good game last night. But the media is falling all over themselves over it, with some even calling it historic. Really, it was a very good game but it wasn't anything near 'historic.' Historic is what Bumgarner did in 2014. That was a series for the ages and, statistically, is considered the one of the best WS efforts ever.
And there have other great WS performances -- Kofax, Johnson, Morris (a 10 inning shut-out)... So... Very good. A real gem even.
He really had the Astros off-balance all night. But not historic.
Have to remember: FOX is devastated it's not NY-LA and the ratings they crave. They MUST find the greatest ever somehow.
DeleteHouston was shutdown in NY fairly well especially by Tanaka, who was the greatest ever before Verlander. who perhaps regain the greatest ever again after tonight.
Ratings, Ratings, Ratings!
Oops, down 19% from last year’s World Series opener, and worse yet, down from the Royals and Mets.
Tonight headline: Justin v Justin!
