Spring Training Game Wrap 3/9/2016: Rockies 8 Giants 6

The Rockies rocked Johnny Cueto in his spring debut and the Giants weren't quite able to catch up.  Key Lines:

Denard Span DH:  1 for 2, BB.  BA= .200.  Maybe Span is starting to get his timing down.  Still not playing in the field.

Matt Duffy 3B- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .091.  Duffy's bat has been cold so far.  Maybe this will be the breakout?

Ehire Adrianza SS- 2 for 3.  BA= .278.  Adrianza is saying, "hey, don't forget about me!"

Johnny Cueto  RHP- 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 33.75.  The hitters are going to be ahead of Cueto with this late a start on the spring.  No worries.  He'll catch up.

Adalberto Mejia  LHP- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 1.93.  Nice effort by Mejia here.

Sam Coonrod  RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  I think this was Coonrod's spring debut, and a nice one at that!

Braulio Lara and Ray Black had 1 scoreless IP with 2 K's each.

Chris Stratton makes his second start of the spring tomorrow against the BrewCrew in Maryvale.

  1. They were working things out with Cueto's wind ups, and that's when he developed control issues. I guess the team wanted to downplay that, but I'm unsure why.

  2. I still like ehire despite his struggles, and think he still gdp a shot at being a solid shortstop.
The giants don't usually make decisions based on option years, but I won't complain if they let kelby season in AAA.

  3. Tomlinson was moved to 2nd from his natural SS position last year and looked lost to begin, but his natural ability overcame his inexperience and no one doubted his ability to field by year's end -- nor his ability to hit .302 in the Giant move-the-line manner.
Back at shortstop this spring, he has been flawless in the field showing he is Crawford's backup of the future, or until Arroyo is ready and plays his way into the lineup somewhere.
Tomlinson must LOSE his spot to a display of excellence, not sentimentality.

    1. I see Tomlinson winning the back up SS job which will enable the Giants to replace Adrianza with a much bigger bat like a Kyle Blanks or a Conor Gillaspie.

    2. I'm in this line as well. Not that Adrianza is having a bad spring necessarily, but I'm just not sure his spot is necessary at this point. Kelby provided a spark when he played last year. I cannot say the same for Adrianza, and given the choice would much rather have someone with power like Blanks on my bench than an all glove SS.
