Hunter Pence made capped his spring debut with a mammoth HR, but Jeff Samardzija was not as sharp today as in his prior starts and a late Giants rally fell short. Key Lines:
Hunter Pence RF- 1 for 2, HR(1). BA= .500. Pence was ready for his spring debut. He reportedly still has some soreness in his Achilles tendon. Be careful with that, Hunter!
Ryder Jones 3B- 1 for 1, HR(1). BA= .556. Jones has looked great in short stints this spring. He's probably ticketed for AA. I think his bat is being grossly underrated by most prospect watchers based on my own amateur scouting report.
Jeff Samardzija RHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.00. Probably just normal inconsistency and SSS of spring training here.
Clayton Blackburn RHP- 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 6/3. ERA= 4.32. Seems Blackburn was better than the line looks. 3 perfect innings and should have been out of the 4'th except for a pop fly that fell in no-man's land. Blackburn is having a terrific spring so far.

Split squad tomorrow. Starters listed as TBD. I think it's Peavy's turn, right?

Terrible news for Jarrod Parker out of the A's camp. He re-fractured the medial epicondyle of his right elbow. He's also had 2 prior TJ surgeries. It would seem like his career is all but over at this point.

Doc, what do you think of Span's batting stance, not including the twirl?. He seems to be all set by the time the pitcher actually throws the ball, but it has a lot of movement and adjustment. Can't argue with success, but that's what we used to say about Timmy's delivery. The hero of my youth was Stan Musial and he was both as unorthodox as they came and most emulated by us kids in the late 40's and early 50's. Needless to say, it didn't work for any of us!
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a chance to see Span bat this spring. I know Kruk and Kuip used to deride him as a "human rain delay" when he was with the Nationals because he stepped out of the batters box after every pitch and went through an agonizingly prolonged ritual before getting back in. Next time I see him at bat on TV, I will definitely pay attention.
DeleteHuman rain delay. I saw him take some ABs during a game in the last week or so. That pretty much sums it up with a bit of humor as he's agonizingly slow in the BB.
