Spring Training Game Wrap 3/29/2016: Royals 16 Giants 10

Not sure who's idea it was to have a night game on Cactus League Getaway Day, but this is a game that probably should not have been played.  Clayton Blackburn got roughed up for the second start in a row and some minor leaguers got to strut their stuff a bit.  That's about it.  Key Lines:

Christian Arroyo SS- 3 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .556.  What a spring Arroyo had!  The kid can flat out hit and can't be far away from being MLB ready, at least at the plate.

Austin Slater RF- 1 for 2, HR(1), BB, HBP, SB(1).   BA= .200.  Slater playing OF and showing a bit of power and speed.

Ricky Oropesa DH- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .400.  Ricky got his hits off Yordano Ventura who is a pretty good MLB pitcher who apparently did not have this best stuff in this game.  Hoping Ricky makes the Sacramento roster this season.  He looks like he's hitting more out of a crouch this spring.

Clayton Blackburn RHP- 2.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 8.62.  Blackburn had a rough end to spring training after a nice start.

Giants play the Sacramento River Cats in Sacramento tonight.  Starters TBD, but I think it's Johnny Cueto's turn.

  1. Maybe the disappointment of being sent down contributed to Blackburn ' s rough end to Spring training. He has nothing to prove in AAA.

  2. Arroyo, yes! Be fun if he starts forcing some decisions next year!

Ventura was up in zone after the 1st. Your guy Ricky looked like he almost took a softball-type slash at the ball when he yanked out his HR to right.

Clayton did not look sharp, and the ump was not giving low corners. Giants dugout was barking a bit.

Great snag by Duffy early on, diving to his right, came up firing to first.

    1. IMHO Blackburn, who I've liked all along, looked atrocious in his outing prior to this one... and this final Spring showing didn't do much to change that image.

His prior start was televised, and the reason he couldn't get out of the first inning was because the kid's stuff didn't have nything on it. It just looked like a bunch of slow, flat coasters being served up to the edges of the plate. Honestly, I'm not happy saying it, but that was a visual I won't soon forget. Kid lost some serious helium in my eyes with how he performed this Spring..

Stratton, as others have said, completely opened my eyes though.

    2. It was the first time I'd seen Blackburn throw. Compared to Ventura, who can bring it, it was a pretty big contrast.

He must have something right in Sac last year. But yeah, he didn't look very impressive last night.
