Spring Training Game Wrap 3/17/2016: Giants 8 Padres 4

The Giants took advantage of some sloppy Padres fielding to double up the score on them.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 2, 2B, SF.  BA= .250.  Belt was late getting started due to an illness, but looked much better at the plate tonight than the last game I saw him in.

Jarrett Parker RF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .250.  Parker went deep again tonight and added a 2-bagger.  We've got a horse race between Parker, Gorkys Hernandez and Big Mac for that last OF roster spot.  Gotta think it's Parker's to lose, but options may end up playing a role.

Trevor Brown C- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .400.  Is Andrew Susac hurting?  Does anyone else have the feeling that Brown is pulling ahead in the race for backup C?

Jake Peavy RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 8.53.  The ERA is a bit ugly, but again, the veteran starters are getting their work in getting ready for the season.  Peavy made some nice pitches to limit the damage from the 8 hits.

Ty Blach LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 4/0.  ERA= 5.00.  Blach was pitching to contact and got some great defensive plays behind him, especially in his second inning of work.

Hunter Strickland and Santiago Casilla pitched scoreless innings while Josh Osich gave up a run in the 9'th.

Giants take on the Padres again tonight.  Is it Matt Cain's turn?

Denard Span's jammed shoulder was diagnosed as a bone bruise and was already improved yesterday.  He took BP on a back field.

Madison Bumgarner says he is on track to make his scheduled start on Saturday, 3/19/2016.

Several people have asked about Kyle Blanks.  Baggs reports his Achilles tendons are barking at him again.  He was scratched from a start last night.

Gregor Blanco was scratched from last nights game with a stiff back.

  1. Pence: achilles
    Blanco: back
    Span: shoulder
Blanks: scratched from his expected start in LF.
    Pagan: healthy?
Williamson, Hernandez, and Parker are the starting OF in the last half of Spring Training!
And Ronnie Jebavy makes his debut however inauspiciously!
    Is there a message here?
Looks like Boch and gang are desperately seeking a healthy OF!

  2. Honestly, I just don't know what to make of Brown & Susac at back-up catcher. Coming into Spring Training I'd have not given Brown a chance since he was like the 4th or 5th option at catcher last year. So his hanging on now is... I don't know... Came from out of nowhere?

I don't think Blanks is going to make the 25-man roster. If he's already having problems, he just seems like too much risk to put in the OF and we have plenty of options at 1B.

  3. I thought the Pads were tee-ing off on Peavy pretty good, just a couple of them got too aggressive and popped up. At this point you have to wonder how much more Peavy has in the tank.

Anon - when did Jebavy get in? I watched most the game, maybe it was late innings?

Parker has changed his swing from a couple years back, he looked good. Mac did too. And Hernandez gunned a runner at 2nd quite nicely. Interesting little race there.

    1. Pads definitely beat up Peavy. The farm is going to be needed to help at the bottom of the roation.

  4. Jebavy came in defensively in the bot 8th and true to form the first ball was hit over his head but he went back nicely and actually caught it looking in. He made it to bat in the 9th with 2 outs after Big Mac got toasted again with a 95-mph FB on the wrist. It seemed to square hit a protector. Or, broken wrist maybe. Was a definite clunk and bounce.
Jebavy took a 93 mph ball, then tapped a 94 mph pitch to the 2nd basement but he flew down the line and was only out by feet.
He's the first isn't he of last year's class to get in a game? Who knew he was even there! #81 and no name!

    1. Good looking out!

The Giants are quietly excited about Jebavy. For someone who followed the draft pretty closely last year, I hadn't heard of him... one look at his stats and highlight reel had me feeling excited about the pick though.
