Game Wrap 9/20/2015: Giants 5 D'Backs 1

The Giants backed a strong start by Tim Hudson with a 4-run 6'th inning and held on to avoid a sweep of their weekend series.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .266.  Pagan is slashing .310/.372/.451 since returning to the lineup on 9/1.

Alejandro De Aza- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .259.  De Aza is hitting just .244 but with a .340 OBP since joining the Giants.

Matt Duffy- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(9).  BA= .301.  Duffy has not been caught stealing.

Buster Posey- 1 for 4, HR(19).  BA= .327.  The dinger was a 3-run job giving Buster 93 RBI's on the season.

Tim Hudson- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 4.20.  Second strong start for Huddy after coming off the DL.  He could start two more times, once in Oakland and once at AT&T.  He should get nice ovations at both places.

The Giants get a day off before heading out to face the Padres on Tuesday with Chris Heston taking the mound for game 1.

  1. I thought this was interesting. Buster Olney from ESPN said the following about the Giants:

a rival executive told Olney “the Giants are the quickest fix” of any of the non-playoff teams. While San Francisco has some clear needs in the rotation, they have a lot of payroll coming off the books as well as a solid core of proven veterans and controllable younger players.

That is pretty encouraging. A few fixes and the Giants could be right back contending again. Albeit the fixes are probably 2 starters that will be well over 9 figures combined and possibly (key word "possibly") a 9 figure OF. There are several rumblings that Giants are interested in Upton and Cespedes. My personal belief is that they will not land either one of them but it would be exciting for them to make an effort to. It will be interesting to see what happens with Mike Leake and his "arm tightness" that took him out in the 3rd inning the other day. Any type of extensive surgery and that could drastically change the Giant's off season agenda.

    1. Happy to hear that we might go for pitching and a big bat. Honestly, our current rotation is "Madison and the question marks". We have multiple 'back of the rotation' guys (when healthy), but are short at the top. And I don't see any quick fix down on the farm (Dr. B can correct me on that).
Likewise, we lack a 'stud' hitter in the outfield. Pence is the closest we have. Instead, we have multiple 'good' outfielders, who are nice to have but won't carry the lineup.
We're in very nice shape for young infield talent, and (when healthy) are deeper at catcher than most any other team in the league. And the bullpen has some very nice young arms to mix in with the vets.
Overall, we've got a team that is 'close', and the fixes are doable. It just costs money...

  2. You really have to like this attitude:

SAN FRANCISCO -- Filling in for the injured Joe Panik this season, Kelby Tomlinson has started at just one position: second base. But the Giants rookie says he's open to expanding his defensive capabilities.

The 25-year-old Tomlinson -- who played second base, third base and shortstop over five seasons in the Minor Leagues -- said he hopes to work on learning to play the outfield during the offseason so he'll have enough "practice in case that comes up."

Duffy, in the article, points out:

"He's athletic enough to play at a very high level of defense no matter where he's at," said third baseman Matt Duffy, who was roommates with Tomlinson when the two played together for Double-A Richmond. "You could almost argue that his athleticism is underutilized in the infield."

I, honestly, would love to see him spend some time working in CF. He's got the wheels to have an incredible range as a defensive CFer.

Anyway, I liked the Giants game Sunday. Helped wash the stink of the 49ers melt-down in Pittsburgh out of my mouth.
