Spring Training Game Wrap 3/5/2014: Giants 3 Angels 2

Matt Cain was sharp in his first real game action of the spring and the Giants hit parade kept rolling scoring just enough runs to top the Angels.  Mike Trout did not play in this one.  Key Lines:

Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 3.  BA= .250.   Pablo stroked 2 RBI singles in this one.

Michael Morse- 1 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .182.    Morse had the only XBH of the game for the Giants.

Matt Cain- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Giants starters have now given up just 1 run in 17 IP and possibly more importantly have walked just 1 batter in the same time frame.

Jose De Paula- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 0.00.  DePaula sounded nasty in this one as his FB sat 92-93 MPH with command on both sides of the plate, and he flashed a wicked breaking ball.  A sleeper has awakened!  His stuff has caught the attention of the skipper and unless Petit slams the door to the long relief/spot starter role in short order, I would not be shocked to see De Paula sneak in and steal it.  I'm sure Bochy would love to have that 3'rd LHP option in the bullpen too!

Heath Hembree- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA=    Hembree was much sharper today than in is disastrous first outing.  He was sitting 92-94 on the FB and struck out the last batter with an elevated FB that reportedly "exploded" through the strike zone.

Once again the Giants showed a tendency to get runners on base, but bring in only a small percentage of them with the pitching picking up the slack.  Something to watch going forward.

Around the League:

Turns out Seth Rosin is a Rule 5 draftee.  He was taken by the Mets then traded to the Dodgers.  They have to keep him on the 25 man roster or offer him back to the Phillies for $25 K.

Padres are looking at moving Tommy Medica to the OF.  He's working with Dave Roberts to learn the position.  He definitely seems athletic enough to play LF…..at least as good as Carlos Quentin.  There may be room in the Padres OF with the injury to Cameron Maybin.

Yasiel Puig left yesterday's exhibition game with shoulder and upper back pain.

  1. Thanks for tidbits, Doc: fun facts about Rosin and Medica. What do you know about Rymer Liriano?

How would you like Petit's chances of clearing waivers if his spring is nothing to write home about? And how does that process work pre-season?

Let's say he gets claimed. Does a deal have to be worked out? Or is his salary assumed without a trade and he has to be on the claiming teams' 25 man?

    Thanks for you daily reporting.

    1. I think a claiming team would have to keep Petit on the 25 man or else he would be exposed to waivers all over again. If he stinks it up all spring, I think he would probably pass through, but he could probably declare himself a FA at that point.

Liriano is a slap and dash guy. Probably a longshot to make the Padres opening day roster, but he could get some time in CF with Maybin out.
