Down on the Farm: 7/29/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies vs Colorado Springs Skysox postponed(is this an 8 game series or something?  Seems like they've been in Colorado forever!).

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

High A  San Jose Giants were idle.

Low A  Rome Braves outhit the Augusta Greenjackets 9-6:

Shawn Payne(DH)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .333.

William Simpson(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Nicholas Gonzalez(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Dylan Brooks(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Great to see the lads all doing so well.  I wonder if there is any possibility that Arroyo and Jones might sneak in a few games in Augusta to give them a headstart on next season?  My white whale, Leonardo Fuentes, re-emerges presumably from the DL.  Several pitchers make their pro debuts.  Not sure where Nicholas Gonzalez comes from.  He's a big LHP at 6'4", 200 lbs.  He's 21 yo.  Undrafted FA signee?  Brooks is another of my early obsessions from the 2013 draft.  Rando Moreno is 10 for 17 in his last 3 games with 2 doubles and 2 triples.  John Riley has drawn 6 BB's in his last 2 games.

DSL  Giants defeated the White Sox 3-2:

Gustavo Cabrera(CF, 17 yo)- 1 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .211.
Olbis Parra(RHP, 18 yo)- 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.79.

Gustavo is 8 for 22 over his last 6 games with 6 BB's against 7 K's.

  1. Nick Gonzo is our 24th round pick out of S. Florida! The full spell out on the name threw you off! Full time saturday starter last year, pretty decent K/9 #s, the usual lefty hijinx with the BBs...

Don't have any info on how hard he throws.

  2. So that was Gonzo, Brooks and William (Caleb) Simpson's pro debuts. Pretty sure those were the last 3 holdouts from the 2013 draft class. Very nice to see so many early debuts, that's the best part of the CBA.

This draft class should be fun to watch. Its great to see Arroyo and Jones start strong. I'd like to see them sneak in somewhere besides rookie ball. Looks like Jones and Riley are starting strong with their OBP scores. It's only a matter of time until the saberz are taking credit for this and wondering when the Giants will ruin them as hitters like our pal Brandon Belt.

  3. Two questions..I see that Galindo has been out of the Boxscores in Augusta fro awhile with Max Payne taking his spot...Any news on a significant injury? He was having a really good year....

Also, any words/op eds on the closer for the the DSL team, Luis Castillo? 21 IPs 1ER 0.43 ERA .135 BAA 27K/2BB...I'm a little too "results oriented" with propspect sometimes but he seems a bit old (20) for the DSL.And not huge at 6'2" 170....Still, been pitching great accoriding to the Boxex ANybody know what he throws?

    1. Don't know anything about Galindo.

Don't know much about Castillo except that a rule of thumb is any player in the DSL over age 19 is probably not a prospect. That may not be so true anymore with, hopefully, more accurate age records.

  4. Dodgers sign BWeezy. I appreciate what he did for the Giants, but got tired of his act awhile back. He's definitely one of the bad guys now.
