  1. Duffy holding his own in SJ. Escobar looks STRONG. I think it's time we start to see if a few of these kids from Fresno can't show something at the big league level. I'm working on a post about it right now...

    1. BTW, everybody. Tyler LaTorre was Escobar's catcher yesterday and came away impressed. Check out his tweet over on Cove Chatter.

  2. I think Escobar is a call up in September. Give him Zito's spot and lets see if we found a SP for 2014. That would be one less.

  3. Pill and Kieschnick called up.. About time and about right. Those 2 guys deserved it. Its a lost season lets see what they both have.

I would have to think that Gary Brown might be a September call up with Peguero.. both would play some CF with either Blanco or Torres being DFA by then.

Hopefully Bochy doesn't leave them on the bench and play them every once in a while.

Reds interested in Pence.. if we could get Robert Stephenson it would almost be like winning the WS this year

    1. I was just rapping with Reds fans on MLBTR about Stephenson. Giants loved him in the 2011 draft. It would be a classic Wheeler type deal if they did that. The things is, the Giants aren't letting go of Pence for anything less than a top 100 guy they feel is pretty close. Stephenson fits that bill to the T.

So 2 guys have to go off the roster... This could get exciting quick.

    2. Shank,

What about the young OF Jesse Winker, hes having a good season and was rated highly coming into the draft. I wouldn't mind grabing him along with some other guy, preferably a SP (Corcino? compared to Cueto before this year).

Maybe we could get Winker and Stephenson for Pence and Scutaro?? They could use Scutaro at 3B and besides they do need a 2nd hitter.. Cozart is mediocre.

    3. Not the biggest Winker fan. He is a corner bat with no real defensive or baserunning skills so he has to hit big. Add in the lefty bat factor for our unique situation at PacBell and I think its a long shot. Reds fans were divided on Corcino - it appears his fastball is great but secondary pitches will be a problem. Some were calling him their one untouchable though. I like going to other teams boards to gauge value.

Detroit looks like a match made in heaven for Scutaro. Would you do Rendon straight up? I'm not sure I would, I think Scoots gives a good amount of value. That's sort of crazy actually. But the Giants definitely value to the point of overvaluing prove-out MLB guys who can hit. So they won't sell Scutaro cheap.

  4. Speculation is Tenaka. He has not really done all that much, and Roger takes his "outfield position" (and thensome). I guess Pill could also play OF and 1b, and a little back up at 2b (he played there a bit), but unless they're going to bench Belt OR play Roger/Pill in the corners, I don't see Pill getting too much time.

We need Angel V to get the call up and then maybe start HIM at first base. Either that or Susac and Hector take over catching duties and Posey moves to frist. I don't see either of those happening for a bit, so Belt stays put for now.

    1. Twitter speculation will spread that its Belt for Bud Norris. Let's see what happens. I'm of the opinion that nobody should be untouchable. I'd think that Panda was the biggest chip, but if you are dealing with smart savvy GMs who understand OBP... Belt becomes the biggest chip. This would spark a powder keg of rage among Saber oriented Gints fans.

    2. If the Giants do trade Belt hopefully the can acquire Nick Castellanos for Sergio Romo from Detroit. Then move Sandoval to 1B and Nick over to 3B.

TO me, its a win win situation you don't really put a hole in the lineup and you acquire a quality SP who could improve mightily at ATT. In the offseason go and acquire a RP to compete with Casilla for the closer job.

  5. I actually wouldn't mind Belt for Norris. That would go a long way toward fixing our SP; he's still young and we have him under contract. As much as I like Belt and think he will be a fine first baseman, that is a trade you can make. Moving Sandoval to 1b would be one option, Posey to 1b another, and we have Pill, Angel V, etc. We buy ourselves a couple of years to get the kids (pitching and starters) ready.

    1. I agree. The Giants have position flex and 1B is sort of an easy default. I like Belt a ton, but I'm starting to feel like where there is smoke there is some fire. Don't really want to be stuck with a James Loney who never fills in his potential. I want JT Snow on Steroids!

Bud Norris can strike out fools. The Giants like that a lot, and have had a lot of success in recent years with that exact profile. Let PacBell do its work (with ahem, some concentration from the pitchers facing opposing pitchers...) Giants starters need to focus, and that's hard to do for every single game for four years without it taking its toll...

    2. I love Belt, but I would trade him for Norris, as long as we are getting the Norris of previous years and not the 2013 version, which I'm hoping is because he's in the AL this season. Presumably the Giants can tell the difference.

I am for it mainly because we need better pitching going forward, as insurance if Lincecum takes off. I like Belt better and I think that he'll figure things out soon enough and the Belt Bashers will regret losing him and then blame Sabean for making that mistake, even though they were bashing him all the time. But we do have options at 1B.

I would love to get another prospect also, but I doubt we could pull that off, and I would be happy for a one for one. Still, I think people will miss Belt once he is gone.

    3. Gotta say that Bud Norris doesn't inspire me that much, his best ERA is 3.77 from 2 years ago. This year his strikeout rate has fallen off the map. For all the pain Belt has given giant fans he is a top 10-15 1B making 500k he is still 25 years old and won't be eligible for arbitration until 2015. Norris is a low end number #2, high end number #3 making 3 M and will be a free agent in 2016 after this season. Norris has probably peaked while Belt is on the way up. Why would we trade Belt when he is cheaper and both Belt and Norris's talent levels are slightly above average for their position?

  6. Wow! Can't say I saw these callups coming quite this fast. Giants are obviously sending some pretty strong messages here.

If there is enough interest in Pence to get a top prospect included in a deal, then I think you have to pull the trigger as I don't think you can count on getting equal value in the supplemental round of the draft.

I would do Belt for Norris and not think twice about it.

I would also do Scutaro for Rondon in a second.

Rumors heating up! is there fire in the smoke somewhere?

    1. Although I like Scutaro and wouldn't move him without getting something significant in return, I could see shedding that nine million they're paying him in each of the next two years and using it to get some desperately needed power on the roster. Getting someone like Castollanos in return would be ideal and if they threw in Rondon as well, then see ya Marco.

      Delete
    2. I'm with Gint Fan Deuce here - I'd want both Castellanos and Rondon for Scoots. Yes, Rondon has some serious heat. But without a secondary pitch (slider is apparently good and change is OK) and control... hard as hell to break through. Both those Tiger prospects are 21/22 as opposed to age 24 with Brown and Hembree. Scutaro might be a bust his 3rd year, but he is making that contract sing at the moment, and don't think for a second the trophy chasing tigers didn't notice what a veteran professional he was getting the Gints to the dance and rampaging.

I think all fans overvalue prospects. But we're not talking prospects here, we're talking seasoned major league ballplayers who have won it all. That has some value. I like how the Giants are stacking this up.

      Delete
    3. Tigers won't deal Casteallanos for Scutaro. Take that to the bank! Maybe if they worked some kind of mega deal for Pence, Scutaro and Romo, but Castellanos is as close to untouchable as it gets.

      Delete
    4. Not a huge fan of Nicky C. He's a 3B/OF who can't run much and can't field much. We sure he can hit? He has to hit! With power. Maybe he can hit. If we're doing mega deals I'd want to be talking to the Pirates about Polanco over Castellanos for sure.

    5. Gotta admit, I'm just parroting what the Fangraphs crowd says about Nick Castellanos, and what do they know, anyway?

  8. Something still doesn't seem right. If you know Abreu is going on the DL, why send down another back up infielder like Tanaka? I know Pill has dabbled at 2B but now really all we have as a true reserve in the infield is Arias. With Crawford having trouble hitting left-handers and Marco's creaky back, you'd think we'd want more depth than this. Bochy also said Roger K wasn't close to major league ready about a month ago?? Strange moves taken by themselves.

    1. The Giants have a long and distinguished history of throwing their AAA guys against the wall to see what sticks. I don't pay much attention to what Sabean/Bochy tell reporters, I watch the actions. A lot of what they do is educated guesswork, you never know how a guy is going to handle it til he's there.

      Delete
  9. I get that but you'd think they would have thrown a true infielder like maybe Brock Bond or someone. We are going to be very limited in the infield in term of options. I still remember Huff at 2B and I can see something like that happening with out current bench. We may get to see Posey there afterall.

    1. I hate to admit this, but I've lost track. Is Noonan on the roster? I think he's still in AAA. I'm sure he's a phone call away from being back in the saddle. Brock Bond doesn't have the chops defensively or with the bat for the show. Team Noonan crushed this one big time. Arias can handle SS/2B and if we're doing comedy, Pill can play the Huff roll with better energy.

      Delete
  10. Noonan is still down in the minors. Not going to be too much help when Bochy looks down the bench and see Pill as one of his back up infielders. There has to be another move coming to prevent this from being an option for more than a game or two.

    1. Right now the Giants need power, and bad. If the Giants feel they don't have enough IF bench, I'm sure you'll see Noonan in time. But Arias can play all over the infield, and I'm sure they feel there are much bigger needs at this point. Pill has paid his dues, he needs to be on the squad.
