Down on the Farm: 7/25/2013

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees swarmed the Fresno Grizzlies 9-4:

Juan Perez(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .308.
Hector Sanchez(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .328.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(12), BB.  BA= .269.
Ydwin Villegas(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .358.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.29.

That does not look good after Kickham's name.  Anybody know what happened?  Game wrap on the Griz' website just says he was taken out of the game.  Maybe pitch count?  First 5 batters reached base, but then he got the next two outs and he K'd the last batter he faced.

AA  Akron Aeros defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-1:

Joe Panik(2B)- 1 for 3, HBP, SB(9).  BA= .258.
Andrew Susac(C)- 2 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .263.

High A  San Jose Giants held off the Lancaster Jethawks 4-3:

Matt Duffy(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .294.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(5), BA= .367.
Ryan Cavan(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .303.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 10/4.  ERA= 4.02.

Command performance by Blackburn who had a perfecto going through 6.2 IP.  He now has 4 QS in a row in which his ERA is 1.73 in 26 IP with 25 K's against just 3 BB's.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets vs Savannah Sand Gnats postponed.

Short Season  Hillsboro Hops topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 1-0:

Chris Johnson(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.25.
Dan Slania(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Rookie AZL  Giants were idle.

DSL Giants beat the D'Backs 4-1:

Jean Angomas(RF, 18 yo)- 2 for 3, 2 BB, SB(4).  BA= .355.
Gustavo Cabrera(CF, 17 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .210.
Carlos Valdez(LF, 19 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .286.
Eusebio Encarnacion(RHP, 18 yo)- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.21.

Gustavo has a little 3 game hit streak going with multiple hits in his last 2. He's hitting .243 over his last 10 games.    Take out one 0 for 5 and it would be .281 over his last 9.  Those 0 for 5's will kill the old BA!

  1. I was wondering the same thing. He was at 42 pitches in the 1st! Man, things are free-falling for that kid right now. He's got the stuff, but I really feel like it's mental with him. Hopefully he comes into camp with a clear head next year, ready to earn a spot.

    1. Speaking about Kickham. Somehow forgot to mention that.

    2. If he was at 42, then he definitely came out due to pitch count. They usually won't let them go much over 30 in one inning.

    3. Speaking of pitch count, Blackburn went 18 up 18 down with 62 pitches. That's some sweet sweet efficiency right there. Timmy, take notice!

    4. Maybe Timmy can go down to San Jose and learn from Blackburn.

  2. So I looked into the QO across bezball a bit more. Here's a survey mlbtr did: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/which-players-will-receive-a-qualifying-offer.html

The results were 4 guys over 50% chance: Cano, Ellsbury, Choo and Granderson. Pence, Timmy, Kuroda and McCann were 25-50% chance. (Along with Garza, now traded and ineligible) Plus Chase Utley. There is also a chance Josh Johnson would get a QO from the most draft game-is-ist org in the majors... Longshots: Mike Napoli, Ervin Santana, Nelson Cruz.

Now to try and guess how many teams "lose" their picks and how many extra picks at the back end of the first:

The thing is, the Yanks are odds on favorites to re-sign Granderson/Cano, so no harm/no foul. If Kuroda gets the offer, he most likely is pitching and I don't see why he doesn't just go back to the yanks.

Choo and Ellsbury are most likely getting bid up huge, I bet those 2 cost. Utley? Hard to guess. Johnson? Why would anybody take a 14MM chance on that injury risk? If Tor kills his value with a QO I bet they get stuck with him. McCann should get the QO in a thin market.

I'd guess 7 offers but the Giants will make a big effort to retain both these guys because it is a thin FA market. I could see only 2-3 teams losing picks besides whatever happens with Timmy/Pence.
